Public's Renewed Focus On Education Could Teach Governor A Lesson (George Skelton Alert)
Los Angeles Times ^ | 01/27/05 | George Skelton

So a special election is a big risk even for a celebrity politician considered by many to be invincible. If there's no compromise with the Legislature on these proposals, there'll be a bitterly partisan shootout between Schwarzenegger and Democrats — between his special interests and the Democrats' interests, including the potent California Teachers Assn.

Yep. The legacy media, represented by its editorial columnists such as the Los Angeles Times Sacramento Bureau Chief George "Slumberin'" Skelton, have supplanted the Democratic Party as the main opposition to the Governor. As you can see from the excerpt, "its all for the chilrun." Liberals are so predictable in defending a broken status quo. Especially when its the public employee unions like the teachers' union. Lots is at stake: money, power, access, and influence. For the Left, the big risk, which Skelton doesn't mention, is to face their own PATCO moment. In the Bluest of Blue States. The die is cast between the Governator and the special liberal interests opposed to common sense reforms.

Skelton and the LA Times are spokesmen for the Democratic machine. When they're upset, Arnold is doing something right. If they praise him, he's doing something badly wrong.

It will be a great day for this badly abused state when the LAT collapses under the weight of its own arrogance and goes bankrupt.

State schools superintendent Jack O'Connell this week called for massive tax increases for the public school bureaucracy while issuing a blunt warning to Gov. Schwarzenegger: "Stop starving our schools." Here's how the governor is "starving our schools." According to the Legislative Analyst's Office, the governor's proposed budget provides $9,508 for every pupil in the California public schools. That's $206 per pupil more than last year. That means every classroom of 30 students will receive $6,180 more next year than it did this year - or a total of $285,240 per classroom. In fact, over the past ten years, total funding...

CA: Biowasteful spending? DHS can't say how it spent $100 million
California politicians love to gripe about how the state gets shorted by the federal government. Those complaints sound peculiar against the background of some recent news. Over the last three years, the state Department of Health Services has received about $100 million in federal funds to fight bioterrorism, and officials there can't seem to account for it.
