Virginia's Children of Promise (VCOP) is a mentoring program provided by United Methodist Family Services (UMFS). It is made possible by Federal grant monies extended to faith-based organizations under President Bush's agenda. This program, and others like it, provides mentoring services to youth (6-15) with a parent incarcerated. UMFS has partnered with the Virginia Conference of United Methodist Churches and the All God's Children Camp to extend mentoring beyond one week of summer camp.

The vocal left in the Virginia Conference of the UMC apparantly have duped the poster into retracting what was a truthful statement. The staff in Glen Allen (near Richmond) running the message board (vacommunications@vaumc.org) go along willingly on a ride with the lefties.
The offended complainers may simply be ignorant of President Bush's connections to this faith-based initiative with Virginia Methodists. I suspect that instead they are in fact blatantly dishonest, know full-well the connections, and simply cannot stomach the thought of Bush and Methodism coinciding in the same paragraph.
In any event, the libs at the Virginia ClergyNet message board never posted my statement of facts. The facts --- available in an internet search of about a minute --- are these:
The United Methodist Family Services office in Richmond Virginia is the recipient of $200,000 in federal grant funding from President George W. Bush's faith-based initiative, administered by the Department of Health & Human Service's Administration for Children and Families.
The UMFS organization is of course closely associated with the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, receiving $145,627 of Conference funding in 2003, collaboration with the CGBGM, posting priviliges in Clergy/LaityNet, and support and involvement in other ways.
This makes the UMC a rather direct partner with President George W. Bush and his faith-based agenda.

President Announces Mentoring Grants for Children of Prisoners
President Bush today announced $45.6 million in grants to provide mentors to children of prisoners. Aimed at helping some of the two million children who have at least one incarcerated parent, the grants are the latest in President Bush’s agenda of compassion in action.
“Mentors are the heroes who provide a trusting relationship with a child or youth in need,” HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said. “We know that youth outcomes can be improved with the help of a mentor. Today’s grants will give young Americans the hope and guidance they need to grow up to be successful, healthy adults.”
Research has found that significant physical absence of a parent has profound effects on child development. Children of incarcerated parents are seven times more likely to become involved in the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. Parental arrest and confinement often lead to stress, trauma, stigmatization and separation problems for children. These problems may be compounded by existing poverty, violence, substance abuse, high-crime environments, child abuse and neglect, multiple caregivers and/or prior separations.
“Children of prisoners need mentors. They need caring, responsible and committed adults who can be role models, counselors and teachers,” said Dr. Wade F. Horn, HHS assistant secretary for children and families. “Youth who have parents in prison still have the same yearning and desire for a father or mother as any other child. These grants -- part of President Bush’s agenda of compassion in action -- will help give kids mentors who will make a difference in their lives.”
The grants are administered through HHS’ Administration for Children and Families, which received 581 applications this year for new grant money. Panels were conducted in Washington for two weeks in May and 164 grantees were selected, totaling $35 million. Some of the recipients include Volunteers of America in Louisiana, the Anchorage Children’s Home in Florida and Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Michigan. The awards are the first installment in three-year grants.
Additionally, five tribal grantees -- as announced by Secretary Thompson during a July 19 visit to the Navajo Nation -- won mentoring awards totaling $1.7 million. The awards are the first installment in three-year grants.
Finally, $8.9 million was awarded to organizations for their second year of mentoring service, continuing the three-year grants announced last year.
The mentoring children of prisoners program is a three-year initiative put forth by President Bush in his 2003 State of the Union address, fully funded this year by Congress. So far, approximately 6,000 kids have been mentored, with an expectation of 33,000 additional youth served as a result of the new grants. A complete list of organizations and grant awards is below:

President Bush would be welcomed into the So Baptist Church.
50 years ago, the United Methodist Church would be under investigation by the House Un-American Acivities Committee.
Like the Episcopalians and Prebyterians their hierarchies have strayed far from the paths of orthodox Christianity and further actively fund anti-American activites like anti-Second Amendment Legislation, anti-war groups, etc.
Mainstream Christians in the Methodist Church should either take back onctrol of thier institution from the perverse and wicked leaders who have seized control of it, or vote with their feet and tithes and go elsewhere. As you suggested, the Baptists are a possibility - ther are others.
My Brother's family are Methodist and they are really having a hard time trying to reconcile their convictions with those of their church.

I agree. It's hard to be a Methodist today. Fortunately, congregations in the South and Plains states are quite conservative. Change at the upper levels of the church will take time. It's better to work within the system than to abandon it, in my opinion.
