The politics of the Rice vote

WASHINGTON -- In parliamentary systems it is not uncommon to turn a political nomination -- or even a relatively insignificant bill -- as a way of expressing a lack of confidence in the government or in a major policy. In the United States that is far less common, but 12 Senate Democrats (plus the independent Jim Jeffords) have done precisely that over the Condoleezza Rice nomination for secretary of state.

They have used it as a vehicle to stake out their opposition to the Iraq War. They are likely to pay a heavy political price. In this country, it is customary to allow the president to choose his own Cabinet, so long as the nominee is minimally qualified. Rice is superbly qualified and everyone concedes that. So it is mildly shocking that the Democrats mustered more votes against this nomination for secretary of state than for any since 1825.

Indeed, secretaries of state are generally approved unanimously. This is the first nomination in a quarter-century to have earned even a single dissenting vote. It is certainly legitimate for senators to use whatever instrument they wish to make a political point. But it is not very smart.

And Barbara Boxer has clearly used the Rice hearings to raise her national political profile

I would love to see Boxer as the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee.

So, did Hillary use her FBI files to blackmail these senators into voting against Rice so as to make her appear more centrist? I don't trust her farther than I can throw her.

The Ku Klux Klan evidently gained 12 votes in the U.S. Senate in the last election. They went from one Kleagle (Byrd) to thirteen.

This needs verification. Please throw her as far as you can, then come back and report. If necessary, throw her several times.

The vote against Dr. Condoleezza Rice may have been a sign that the long honeymoon of the Left with the civil rights movement is over. It is clear that the liberals in the Senate have no interest in surrendering up any position of serious responsibility and power to ANY minority in this country. Even if the member of the minority were in full and complete agreement with the goals of the liberal Left, an American of African origin is not to be trusted with GENERATING policy, he or she may only parrot it. In the eyes of the liberals, all Americans of African origin are forever tainted. And Senator Kennedy is right up at the forefront of this movement.

I didn't see any objections from the Black Caucus or the NAACP. I think the old civil rights movement showed their true "color" by their silence. Selective outrage cancels out any other cry of racism from these people.

Now on the other hand, younger blacks may take the 13 nay voters to task. Hopefully a new day is coming in the African American communities.

"Hitlery -- pure politics and sleaze, zero substance.'

What if Boxer is setting herself up as the next Dean for the 2008 election?

That will enable $inator Hildebea$t to appear to move to the right to be the "conservative choice" for the rat pack.

That is exactly what happened last year with Dean and Kerry. Dean positioned himself as far left as he could and won in the NE primaries. Then, Kerry suddenly in Iowa appears as Mr Middle of the Road, wins and goes on to win the nomination for the rats.

The left never considered the black people as anything other than useful idiots. Willing to vote over and over again on empty rhetoric and unkept promises.

If the Democrats threat to slow down the nominations of Bush's cabinet is true, then what they are doing in the guise of "advise and consent" is to de-link the advise from the consent. In other words, they will "advise" the president on any subject that is a pet peeve of theirs at the time, and then "consent" to his nomination.

======
My word, could we not find a more UNQUALIFIED candidate than Boxer, even Hitlery has her beat (very slightly). But yes, it will be a huge game of "WHO CAN NOT LOOK LIKE THE LIBERALS THAT THEY ARE!"... it will be a real laughing match, given that all the candidates are well-known Marxists, especially Hitlery, and Boxer is just a babbling, stupid leftist who showed her absolute stupidity, both real and politcal, when she attacked Dr. Rice...STUPID!

A real side-show is in the works for us, from the morons we know and love, Kerry and Dean, to the nags, Hitlery and lord knows, who else....what a bunch of phony clowns.

My Prediction for 2008:

Rice will be the next President of the USA, and everything the world wide loonie left does to prevent that from happening, just makes it that much more inevitable.

"You don't expect to see an iconic civil rights leader like Andrew Young indignantly defending a Bush administration appointment. It took the Senate Democrats' attack on Rice to produce that unlikely scene"

Get a clue, dems!

As for Hillary..no one ever accused the Clintons of being dumb politically..Hillary is triangulating for her White House bid.
