A day in the life of President Bush (1/30/05): historic photos
Yahoo News Photos & WhiteHouse.gov ^ | 1/30/05

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: It's snowing in Washington today. The President and First Lady attended St. John's Church this morning before heading back to the White House to continue monitoring events in Iraq.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

In great numbers, and under great risk, Iraqis have shown their commitment to democracy. By participating in free elections, the Iraqi people have firmly rejected the anti-democratic ideology of the terrorists. They have refused to be intimidated by thugs and assassins. And they have demonstrated the kind of courage that is always the foundation of self-government.

Some Iraqis were killed while exercising their rights as citizens. We also mourn the American and British military personnel who lost their lives today. Their sacrifices were made in a vital cause of freedom, peace in a troubled region, and a more secure future for us all.

On behalf of the American people, I congratulate the people of Iraq on this great and historic achievement.

President George W. Bush, speaking to the American people from the White House today.

Here is a link to the complete transcript of the President's Statement on the Iraqi Election.

Well, I only noticed because I saved it... so, I wonder when it was taken now.

"I said what I meant and I meant what I said..."

You gave me a great excuse to repost the photo I like best from the President's speech today. In fact, it's time we gave our Dubya another nickname: Steely-Eyed George.

Here are some of my favorites:

her finger stained with blue ink and a small card reading 'Elect Iraq '

I see HAPPY!

This one chokes me up....
Iraqi man carries crippled old man to vote.

Thanks for doing this early.

Had to do it early, first because I'm like a kid in a candy store about events like this, and second because I can't stay online too long today.

The new Barney pic is a wonderful bonus. Still no Beezie sighting, however. Sigh. I guess we can't have it all.

This day has brought joy to so many. It is truly spectacular. I hope Bush can spend a relaxing day now, before his feet hit the ground running tomorrow! Maybe he play a little ball with Barney and Miss Beazley! (selfishly thinking about tomorrow's Dose. LOL)

Lovely picture of the Iraqi woman holding a piece of paper that says "Thank you. Thank you USA".

Yes, and thanks to jakkknife for adding it to this thread.

Speaking of our troops, it seems appropriate to add this photo to the thread. Soldiers from the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division stop to pray at the road connecting Baghdad and Baquba, Januray 30, 2005. The soldiers prayed at the site where four comrades were killed last week when their vehicle rolled over into the water. And we must not forget the British C130 which crashed today.

The price has been very, very high, but as the President said, our Armed Forces and those of our allies are ensuring a more peaceful future of us all.

thank you for the early ping Wolfstar on this very historic day.

Congratulations to all those very brave Iraqis who stood up to be counted today - you have made a difference to your country's future and did not bow down to those that mean you harm.

I don't know the church Reagan went to while he was in DC, but it could have been St. John's since it's close to the White House.

I have been celebrating all day on every available thread.

Well worth celebrating, Meg. This event is every bit as momentous as the end of WWII and the night the Berlin Wall fell.

Our Commander in Basra has just confirmed live on Sky that the security operation in Basra for the elections today was in fact Iraqi Police controlled with the British Troops backing them up. This is the news that we all want to hear not only hear but see proof of which there was plenty in Basra today.

The Commander also confirmed that the atmosphere in Basra was a carnival atmosphere with families turning out celebrating in the streets.

We certainly have a lot to be thankful for today.

Still no word on the Hercules crash except that Tony Blair has confirmed British deaths and that an investigation is underway but not further details until families of those who have been killed are advised.

Very encouraging to see Free Republic comments about Pres. Bush who was the architect of Iraqi freedom. The MSM totally ignores his role in this. If you were from outer space, you'd wonder who he is. Infuriating.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU WOLFSTAR. We would really have missed having the Dose today except for your doing this.

Glorious, glorious day.

We really need a slogan for this day similar to "Take down this wall." Something along the line of "Saddam Hussein, come out of that hole."

Anybody have any ideas?

"Terrorists and insurgents and democrats will continue...."

LOL! Can you believe Tim Russert (an old Dim party hack before he became a TV talking head)? All the other news chat shows this morning had our new Secretary of State on to discuss the Iraqi elections and other relevant matters. In contrast, Timmy had that has-been, John Kerry, on for the full hour of Meet the Depressed. ROFLMAO!

Those are great photos, Timeout. The first one is striking. What we can see of her face indicates she's a young woman. Her future looks a heck of a lot brighter now than it did a couple of years ago.

From what I understand Ronald Reagan rarely went to church because he felt it was unfair on the rest of the congregation.

He said that because of the security required he felt it would disrupt people worship and also he said that he did not want to put another people at risk.
