Germany pushes IT pro into prostitution
Daily Telegraph online (via www.professorbainbridge.com) ^ | 30 January 2005 | A123

A 25-year-old waitress who turned down a job providing 'sexual services' at a brothel in Berlin faces possible cuts to her unemployment benefit under laws introduced this year. .... The waitress, an unemployed information technology professional, had said that she was willing to work in a bar at night and had worked in a cafe. .... Under Germany's welfare reforms, any woman under 55 who has been out of work for more than a year can be forced to take an available job – including in the sex industry – or lose her unemployment benefit. Last month German unemployment rose for the 11th consecutive month to 4.5 million, taking the number out of work to its highest since reunification in 1990.

The government had considered making brothels an exception on moral grounds, but decided that it would be too difficult to distinguish them from bars.

Let's see..........hmmmmm. A glass of wine = or oral sex? Too tough to tell them apart I guess.

It's a surprise to many of us that the Germans believe they waited until 2002 to legalize prostitution.

There've always been a lot of whores in Germany anyway ~ it's not at all shocking to see that they've gone ahead and made it a requirement for unemployed women.

Hate to brak the news to you, but there are plenty of sleazes right here in the good old USA, so I fail to see the point of your slam.

If you don't take a job as a prostitute, we can stop your benefits

Just the facts; just the facts.

Whether there are hookers in the US or not, leastwise your dear old mom can't be made to take a job in a whorehouse or lose her unemployment benefits.

Seems that is not the case in Deutschland ~ it's become mandatory.

The Old Germany is back FUR SHUR. Look for the man with spikey helmet, eh?!

I can't help but think most of these women are perfectly capable of a real job and probably refuse. This sounds like a government desperate to get these slackers to consider the factory or the office...or else "it's to the whorehouse with you"!

I'm sure that this is not by design - this is a case of the social engineering bureaucracy tripping up over its own feet. It's a huge embarrassment to Germany and I'm sure this will be 'fixed' in a very expedient manner. This is nothing more than a testament to government ineptitude.

As far as German sexual values go, whatever you can find there, you can also find here. We have no justifiable claim to the moral high ground, I'm sorry to say.

The Germans allow the cops to directly fine you for urinating on the sidewalk too.

Proving that it's a really, really strange country.

Of course a Christian would see this as sin -- could they get an exemption for freedom of conscience -- but then I forgot, there are apparently are no more Christians left in Germany.

I can understand this logic ... and I think that politicians who get voted out of office at age ... say 51 ... should also be forced to work in the sex industry. Wouldn't it be poetic justice to walk into a house of ill repute and see Tom Dashle sitting there in his panty hose with his legs crossed? Afterall ... he's been a prostitute all of his life.

It's a huge embarrassment to Germany and I'm sure this will be 'fixed' in a very expedient manner.

Reading further in the article we find:

The government had considered making brothels an exception on moral grounds, but decided that it would be too difficult to distinguish them from bars. As a result, job centres must treat employers looking for a prostitute in the same way as those looking for a dental nurse.

It appears this is not a bureaucratic FUBAR but a considered position of an increasingly ill-guided culture. Now America may not be much better, but I think we can agree that this particular travesty would not floated here.
