'Celebrity Backlash' Helped Re-Elect Bush, Actor Says
CNS News ^ | 2-3-05 | Marc Morano

Capitol Hill (CNSNews.com) - Stage and screen actor Ron Silver, in Washington for President Bush's State of the Union address Wednesday night, credited left-wing celebrities -- particularly filmmaker Michael Moore -- with helping to re-elect George W. Bush.

"The celebrity backlash helped," Silver said. "Michael Moore, I think, was a big factor --a really big factor," Silver told Cybercast News Service in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall, following Bush's speech.

Silver's acting credits include the television series "The West Wing," and "Chicago Hope" as well as the movie "Reversal of Fortune." He also is a co-founder of the Creative Coalition, a social and political advocacy organization of the (generally liberal) entertainment industry, and he has stood out in Hollywood for supporting the war in Iraq.

"The attention paid to [Moore] -- the lionization of his piece of propaganda (the anti-Bush movie "Fahrenheit 911") -- I think it all kind of backfired," Silver said.

Silver, a former Democrat, was responding to a question about a billboard campaign in Hollywood sponsored by the conservative group Citizens United that is thanking celebrities for helping to re-elect Bush.

One billboard displays an image of President Bush juxtaposed against the images of several celebrities, including Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Barbra Streisand with the text: "4 More Years. Thank You Hollywood!"

From where I stand, Michael Moore would be a big factor in ANYTHING he got involved with.

On January 20 we watched "Enemies, A Love Story", my favorite Silver movie, as a tribute to the man.

Sure it helped.

When Joe Sixpack hears the Hollywierd leftists spouting off against some politician, they figure he/she HAS to be doing something right.

Similar to: "If the sheetheads are against it, then I am for it."

I still recognize the tremendous speech Mr. Silver gave at the Convention. I know a thread was created with messages for him from a number of FReepers. I don't know if he ever received it though. I hope so. I may not always agree with him, but I have great respect for him.

Who can forget the infamous fund raiser where Kerry laughed while Whoopi made fun of the sexual connotations of the name "Bush!"

I want my celebrities on the screen, blowing up sh!t if they are male and wearing as little as possible (if they are comely enough) if they are female. If they want to be subtle in their political leanings that is okay also, no matter what side they are on. Ben Affleck is a good example. He spoke his views on issues he believed in, quoted a few facts and stayed away from hard rhetoric. I can respect that, I support a couple of "non-conservative" view points myself.

But when it gets to loud, hateful and irrespectful, I tune that out.

Give Effing Kerry his due, also. If he hadn't infuriated Vietnam vets by trying to run on his war record, the Swiftees never could have scored their hits.

Not to worry, the celebs will not take this message to heart. They care more about face time on cameras than their "cause."

Ron Silver has my respect. I know he is a Lib and probably against the majority of Bush's policies, but he knows the President is RIGHT about the WOT and he has stood firm. If Liberals were like him, they wouldn't be in the mess they are in today.

It takes a great deal of character and strength to stand beside someone they disagree with on 99% of the issues. he does it because he's a Patriot. He does it because he loves America and realizes Bush isn't the anti-Christ but a man that equally loves this country and will defend her.

Ron Silver is among the few in Hollywood that I DO respect as a man.

Unless I'm mistaken, Silver is not a former democrat. He has been very pro-Bush since 9/11 and he is an outspoken supporter of our nation's involvement in Iraq. However, he is still quick to point out that he is a democrat.

When and HOW did a crowd of ex manicurists, porters, waiters/waitresses and other semi literate losers EVER presume to tell the American voter how it ought to be. If they, as a group or as individuals could ever sound like something less than hysterical mental defectives, maybe no one would take offense at their arrogant presumption to know more and better than the rest of America.. but I'm not holding my breath.

Ditto.

I will never forget those Liberals that chose this country's survival over Liberal policy. I KNOW it would be difficult if positions were reversed. I can only hope I'd rise to the occasion and do the same if it ever came to that.

There are some real clowns out there who really, truly believe that Hollywood HELPED Kerry, if it hadn't been for their support (very vocal and strident and crass, I might add), Kerry might have lost by more. One even stated this flat out on O'Reilly. Talk about living in a land of delusion! What egos!
