Spanking stepfather acquitted

A 36-year-old Stavanger man has been acquitted of assault and battery after spanking his two stepsons. The court ruled that the action fell within the bounds of a parent's right to punish.

The boys were aged seven and nine in the winter of 2002/2003 when they received spankings on four separate occasions. The boys were hit hard three times across the buttocks with a flat hand while they lay on their stomachs across their stepfather's knee, newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad reports.

The 36-year-old handed out the punishment because the boys had been unruly for some time and had hit schoolmates. The deputy judge preferred to convict on the grounds that the physical punishment of children, with the exception of a "light slap", is forbidden.

The two associate judges ruled that the accused had acted only with the best interests of the boys as a motive. The court also took into account that the punishment was not dispensed in anger, but was planned and warned.

Good for them!
The world has gone nuts that this even went to court.

"Ping" for the "Norway ping list."

Uh, there is something rather more serious going on in the Nebraska of Europe, however; the European "Union," perhaps in retaliation for Norway (a) supporting the United States in the War against Terror, and (b) refusing to join the European "Union" itself, has imposed tariffs on fish from Norway, in amounts that surpass even the cost of the fish themselves.

There appears no real economic reason for this; it appears to be utterly retaliatory in nature, out of spite, because Norway is serious about the War against Terror, and Norwegians wish to remain Norwegians, rather than becoming some sort of "European" as defined by Paris, Brussels, and Berlin.

So everybody here in America who likes fish, look for the "Made in Norway" label on the can, and buy that one, so as to show our solidarity with our good brothers of the North.

You should contact the Norwegian embassy in Washington.

They might pay you for your effort :-)

Reminds me of a passage in the one of the earlier works of the late James Michner; his contemporaneous "The Bridge at Andau" about the the short-lived Hungarian Revolution of 1956. He went into some detail about the brutalities of the communist regime of the time, so brutal, in fact, that even I wondered if he couldn't be exaggerating. Anyhow, one of the aspects of underground society was the fact that parents had to dispense discipline with care, because children were (of course) encouraged in school and "young pioneer" activities to denounce their parents for the slightest pretext. If I recollect, the general practice was to administer a spanking only after telling the child why they had to do it and an adminishment that if the child wanted to denounce them to the commissars, they could but they would end up regretting it. Too say the least, such an atmosphere made for parents who never, ever lost their tempers, or administered punishment in anger. Looks like things are headed that way now, judging from the headlines.

Okay, but I draw the line at lutefisk.

I assure you, Madam, there is plenty of sanity in Norway; it is just that, Dan-Rather-like, it does not get reported.

Norway has the second-highest per capita expenditure on national defense (preceded only by the United States), and is obviously serious about defending itself.....both on its borders, and in faraway Afghanistan and Iraq.

Norway has steadfastly refused to join the European "Union," because Norwegians, like Nebraskans in this country, wish to keep their own distinct identity, instead of becoming some sort of bland faceless dull "European."

But don't look for the "mainstream media" to report on all the things good about Norway and Norwegians; one can get this information only from the "Norway ping list" here on Free Republic (holler if you want on the list).

Norway deserves our good wishes, Madam, and also if you like fish, buy the fish with the "Made in Norway" label.

Sir, I am publicizing Norway only out of unselfish motives.

By the way, soon I will change my working hours, so I can be on-line on Norway time, rather than Nebraska time (you guys are six hours ahead of us).

One of the fourteen clocks in this house has been switched from Nebraska time to Norway time, but I am bothered that it bears the "Made in Sweden" label. I am hoping to find a clock made in Norway, to replace it.

You are right, sir, this issue is something that never should have seen the light of day--but alas it is happening all over the place, even north of the United States.

However, there is hope--these are Norwegians, after all--in case you missed a Norway thread from several days ago, students in Norway--not their parents, not their teachers, but the young students themselves--are DEMANDING that their schoolbooks be accurate; it had something to do with left-wing "academics" distorting history, and the students were pretty upset with it.

There is hope, sir.

How effing generous of them to give parents any rights at all.

We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods,
Will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde singing and crying:
’valhalla I am coming!’

On we sweep,
With thrashing oar.
Our only goal will be the western shore...

Where can I buy either one? I am tired of nearly everything in the U.S. being made in Communist China.

I think you'd HAVE to draw the line at lutefisk, as I'm quite sure no one cans it, lol.

Right, sir, that is a problem.

This house, out here on the lone prairie, is perhaps one of the very few that has nothing, absolutely nothing, with the "Made in Red China" label on it.

Most people are somewhat squeamish about buying products made by involuntary slave labor, but that is it--they are merely squeamish about it, and buy it anway.

On the other hand, those of us who have actually seen conditions under which these things are produced, tend to be more adamant about wanting to have nothing to do with it, and go out of our way not to.

I assume, sir, that Norway has labor laws that require a minimum wage and decent working conditions, and so one can buy any product from that country with an easy conscience; not to mention that despite the Dan-Rather-inspired ballyhoo that Norwegians are "peaceful socialists in a land of milk and honey," Norwegians are actually, apparently, hard workers, expert craftsmen who produce very good products.
