A Senate committee advanced legislation yesterday that would prohibit smoking in most public, indoor places in Virginia.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Bill Mims, R-Loudoun, was approved by the Senate Education and Health Committee on an 8-7 vote, reversing an earlier Senate subcommittee vote that narrowly rejected the bill.
The legislation would prohibit smoking in most indoor public places, including offices, restaurants, and common areas of apartments and condominiums, with few exceptions. Hotels could permit smoking in some rooms, as long they do not exceed 25 percent of the total rooms. Smoking would be permitted in "private, separately enclosed areas" in bars and offices, but proprietors would be required to post "Warning: Smoking Permitted" signs in those areas.

Richmond ping.
Oh my, I'm becoming speechless. The Senate needs a drastic overhaul.
I can see outlawing smoking in elevators, but other than that, let the prorietors make the call...MUD
ping!
What will this do to Philip Morris Co? I believe they still smoke everywhere in those buildings.
I think we're slowly but surely becoming the "people's republik of Virginia."
I never thought I'd live to see the day but I'm losing hope that there is anyone left in the General Assembly with a shred of sense about anything.
I don't know for sure but I thought I had heard that PM wasn't allowing unlimited smoking on their premises anymore. I'd have to check with a couple people I know who work there to be sure.
Let the marketplace determine whether or not to allow smoking or not. If a business decides they'll make more money if they go non-smoking, then good for them. If another place says, they'd rather allow smoking, then good for them too. People will go where they want.
What is it about "free market" that these buffoons in the GA don't understand?
Fascists invading private property. Are they wearing swastikas or just waving the Nazi flag?
I have a son working as Computer Engineer there and I just wondered. He had said a while back that they allowed smoking there and it bothered him somewhat. He has had allergies and asthma.
give 'em time and it'll be both
This is just one thing. This piece of crap legislation on top of a gun show law, and another law banning cell phones for kids under 18 driving. And don't even get me started on the budget issues.
I thought I was living in Virginia. But I think I've entered the Twilight Zone.
Hell, this actually sounds fairly reasonable compared to what they've done in a lot of places.
The health nazi minister of health here in Ontario is bringing in an anti-smoking law that completely bans smoking in all bars and restaurants, with no provision for separate enclosed smoking areas. When asked, he'll happily tell you that the lack of provision for separate enclosed smoking areas has nothing to do with concern over second-hand smoke, but just because they want to discourage (presumably adults who are old enough to make their own decisions) smokers and encourage them to quit. Freaking fascist.
New Jersey is easy on smoking because it needs the tax revenue from cigarette sales to pay off the bonds that were issued to balance the state budget. New Jersey wants you to smoke because it needs tax money not necessarily because it cares about your individual rights.

Smoking would be permitted in "private, separately enclosed areas" in bars
The insanity continues.
I couldn't agree more, my FRiend...MUD
Does this include "PRIVATE BUSINESS'S" or just public places???
