SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Dr. Laura Schlessinger, famous for doling out advice on her nationally syndicated call-in radio talk show, shared a little of her own personal life with U.S. Army reservists.

Schlessinger told some 300 people at a 425th Civil Affairs Battalion event on Saturday that her son, 19-year-old Deryk Bishop, will join the U.S. Special Forces later this year - a mission that could take him to the Middle East.

Bishop, who enlisted last year, joined his mother on stage to explain his reasons for signing up. He told the crowd at the Calvary Chapel that he resented the way Americans criticize the war without recognizing soldiers' sacrifices - a theme echoed by his mother.

"Real people were fighting and I wanted to be part of that," Bishop said.

Schlessinger said she wasn't too worried about her son.

I would like to know how he is going to join the Special Forces, when you have to obtain the rank of Sp-4 and be promotable to Sgt before being accepted into the program. It took me several years to become qualified.

My guess is he is going into the Rangers program - which is considered a branch of the SF - (and you don't need that grade/rank to enter).

Let's see, she was speaking at a CA BN meeting - which is part of SOCOM. Maybe he is going into Civil Affairs?

I heard that she had a change of heart. She was talking about how she had received much more love and compassion from Christians and none from anyone Jewish during a rough time in her life and it made her stop and rethink her own religion. But, I am not a Laura expert and have not heard her in a long time....so someone out there may know what the current story is on that.

Oh, gee, thanks! I thought that was what I had heard! I had remembered specifically what this article said in that she had a change of heart due to the responses from her audience. Just as the article stated, she felt more love and positive feedback from the Christian community than the Jewish community. Haven't heard anything else since, because I have not had a chance to listen to her show.

Are pics of Dr. Laura mandatory or prohibited?

If they're as boring as her radio show - prohibited, please.
