Dr. Laura's Son to Join Special Forces

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Dr. Laura Schlessinger, famous for doling out advice on her nationally syndicated call-in radio talk show, shared a little of her own personal life with U.S. Army reservists.

Schlessinger told some 300 people at a 425th Civil Affairs Battalion event on Saturday that her son, 19-year-old Deryk Bishop, will join the U.S. Special Forces later this year - a mission that could take him to the Middle East.

Bishop, who enlisted last year, joined his mother on stage to explain his reasons for signing up. He told the crowd at the Calvary Chapel that he resented the way Americans criticize the war without recognizing soldiers' sacrifices - a theme echoed by his mother.

"Real people were fighting and I wanted to be part of that," Bishop said.

Schlessinger said she wasn't too worried about her son.

"I brought my son up to be a warrior," she said. "I feel sorry for the mothers of the bad guys. And I just have a good feeling."

Isn't this the guy in the video at the Republican convention kicking a protestor? Maybe he was thinking of it as combat training.

Time must surely fly.
I would have never guessed he was already 19.
God speed to him.

More power to the young man.

A word of caution however, it's not a done deal yet.

He's got to get through 3 weeks of SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course) to qualify for the 143 day SFQC (Special Forces Qualification Course). They're extreme to the extreme and have a high attrition rate.

Assuming he gets through Q school he's got between 26 and 59 weeks of training after that, depending on the MOS he's assigned, before he's going anywhere on assignment.

Barry Sadler wasn't far off when he wrote "One hundred men will test today, but only three win the Green Beret".

Good luck to this young mand and his desire to go out and defend us. I hope and pray he passes his training with flying colors and joins the rest of the force. God bless him in his quest to be a member of the Special Forces. He has set his bar high and for that alone he deserves to be applauded. As a young person the bar SHOULD be set high. That's called a goal. I wish more young people had them and for some they would be so proud of themselves if they set goals and achieved them. I don't care who it is or who they are when people achieve...they feel good. Darned good.

Good Luck Dyrk.

And Dr. Laura moves up one more notch in esteem for raising an honorable son...
