BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) A speech by controversial University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill originally scheduled for Tuesday night, then cancelled by university officials, will go ahead, according to his student supporters, CBS4 News reports.
Officials with the university sited security concerns as the reason for cancelling the speech inside the University Memorial Center. Supporters then vowed to fight for a court-ordered injunction to allow Churchill to speak. A hearing on the injuction is set for 4 p.m. in Denver Federal court.
No matter what happens in court, supporters say, Churchill will speak tonight outside the University Memorial Center at 7 p.m.
Those who support Churchill say CU is restricting the professor's right to free speech.
"They can expect to hear what I actually said, and the implications of how the media's been spinning it," Churchill said, referring to the content of his speech.
University officials postponed Churchill's lecture because of death threats against the professor and students. Churchill has come under fire for a controversial essay in which he said America, in some ways, deserved the attacks of Sept. 11. He also compared some of the victims of the Twin Towers to the infamous Nazi Adolf Eichmann. The university's vice chancellor, Ron Stump, said Churchill will be allowed to hold his lecture after the proper security arrangements are made.
"What's changed is, we're hearing more and more about threats to professor Churchill, we're also hearing from faculty that there's threats from students," Stump said.
"This is another move to not allow his voice to be heard on campus," student and Churchill supporter Dustin Craun said.
Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said CU is just making up excuses to prevent the professor from talking.
"They can run security for 40,000 drunken students at a football game," Lane said. "They can run security when Salman Rushdie speaks, they can run security event after event, controversial speaker after controversial speaker, [then] they can run security for Ward Churchill.
Churchill's attorney is expected to help in filing the request for an injunction.
LOL 'Bout the sum of it.
What a JABRONI!!
Pardon my ignorance but what is a JABRONI?
I think it is the machine that smooths the ice out at a hockey rink.
But wait until you see the MSM coverage tomorrow! It'll be played like the Second Coming.
No that's a Zamboni (Sp?)
Let him speak, as far as I'm concerned, he may as well be sHhrillary's running mate in '08!
People want to see the football game and are willing to pay to do so. Does this prof think he has the right to a university-sponsored venue to spout his hate speech? Is that what his rights are under the First Amendment? The jerk-off shoud read the Constitution - if he knows how to read!
I am always for letting these idiots have their say. The more they open their mouths, the more irrelevant they become. The majority of Americans (and the number is growing) see what the President has accomplished. They see freedom in Afghanistan, Iraq, possibly Palestine, Ukraine and see that the Bush Doctrine is working. The media can't hide, or excuse, these idiots any longer. Let 'em speak!
free speech lets us see the idiots coming and that way
we can get out of the infected area.
"The more they open their mouths, the more irrelevant they become."
I agree. We need a word for those who fall into this category. Let's call them the "Irrelevantsia".
sited?
would dearly LOVE to see and hear him speak in the same fashion that Thomas Paine spoke in those days after he published his blasphemous Age of Reason. Would love the
smell of hot tar and chicken feathers, and the sound of a few
well placed fists punctuating the sentiments of those Americans who do NOT agree that the US ought be "out of existance altogether." Those Americans who do not believe we need more 9-11 type attacks. But such dreams are of days that cannot return .My people are destroyed for lack of understanding.
I agree, I love that this problem with academia is finally getting uncovered.
Imagine how many parents send their children off to college for the first time for that family. Having never been to university themselves, when little Buffy or Jodi come home spouting off all this"elightenment" they pick up. Mom and Dad are, and probably have been, in the past, intimidated. They don't know where this is coming from and they probably do start to question their ability to "think critically".
Now, Mom and Dad are catching on. Some, not all. But it is a good thing, a light is being shone on these vermin. If we can take down academia--we win the war.
He can certainly speak, but I don't have to listen to his bilge.
