MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) -- A baby born weighing less than a soda can and believed to be the smallest ever to survive went home Tuesday after nearly six months in the hospital.
Rumaisa Rahman's prognosis "is very good," and she is expected to have normal physical and mental development, said Dr. Jonathan Muraskas, who provided care for the tiny girl and her larger twin sister, Hiba, after their births Sept. 19 at Loyola University Medical Center outside Chicago.

Praise God...
An empty or full soda can?
8.6 ounces....less than a full soda can.
The babies were delivered by Caesarean section 14 weeks early at just 26 weeks' gestation
And what is the cutoff for an abortion in St. Louis?
SHAME on them for spending so MUCH money on this little one. ESPECIALLY since a soda can has some VALUE.
Rumaisa weighed 8.6 ounces at birth and measured just 9.5 inches long, more than an ounce less than the previous smallest baby, born at Loyola in 1989 at 9.9 ounces.
The little girl is now 5 pounds, 8 ounces, and almost 17 inches long. She still requires round-the-clock oxygen -- common for premature babies with underdeveloped lungs -- but will be gradually weaned from the oxygen tank, Davidow said.
Hiba, who weighed 1 pound, 4 ounces, and was 12 inches long at birth, now weights 8 pounds, 8 ounces, and is 19 inches long -- about the size of a full-term newborn.
The babies were delivered by Caesarean section 14 weeks early at just 26 weeks' gestation after their mother developed pre-eclampsia, involving dangerously high blood pressure, during pregnancy.
It's just a clump of cells!
Had an elderly relative who died years ago, she was called 'Auntie'. 'Auntie' was a feisty soul. When she was born, premature one would assume, it was said her head would fit in a tea cup. My father use to joke ... perhaps they should have left the tea cup on.
NO ONE knows that answer..
because the slide down the slippery slope is so FAST...
that the sign-posts, along the way, pass by so quickly, that NO ONE is ABLE to read them... much less, UNDERSTAND them.
This is probably one of the best articles I have ever read

It tells you exactly how,
A baby born weighing less than a soda can ...
oh boy. A 'soda can' weighs less than an ounce. Apparently English is a second language for the 'journalist' who wrote this article.
Better to say a "a can of soda" than "a soda can"! There is a vast difference in the implications.
I wonder what the first would be? Are there any languages in which 'noun container' means a container of noun, as opposed to a container for noun?
I am joyed that the parents waited for their child and didn't get rid of it earlier in an abortion!
At what point do preemies "catch up" in size to where they ought to be?
Usually takes about 3 months. It does depend on the baby's metabolism and health.
