The House on Saturday also advanced a bill (HB 1563) that would impose steep fees for certain driving violations to help generate money for road improvements. Under the proposal, the Department of Motor Vehicles would impose fees of $250 for driving with a suspended or revoked license, $350 for reckless driving and $750 for drunken driving. The fees would be paid annually for three years after the offenses.

The DMV also would impose a $100 fee for Virginia drivers with four demerit points on their licenses and $75 for each additional demerit point up to seven.

Nobody is aware of this bill.

In my opinion, this is simply a money grab to fund the car tax 'relief' and should be defeated, fines should be issued at the time of judgement, not yearly.

I say 'GO FOR IT'~. The're gonna impose 'sin taxes', let em' have at it. While they're at it why dont they start charging these trailer park trash types who call the cops constantly for domestic crappola.

Doesn't Virginia have a 12 step program for Taxaholics?

"that would impose steep fees for certain driving violations to help generate money for road improvements."

More legalized extortion. This is disgusting legislation.

It is disgusting, no suprise it comes out of unFairtax County.
"The bill's sponsors - Republicans Dave Albo and Tom Rust of Fairfax County - said the fees could generate up to $129 million annually. Most of the proceeds would fund road projects in the state's fastest-growing areas."

Somehow I doubt anybody that is not concerned about driving without a license or on a revoked license is going to be too concerned about some unpaid fines...

NJ's surcharges are $1000 a year for 3 years for drunk driving, and other surcharges for other offenses and people just can't get out from under them. It's really a racket and it's sad.

Yep, and Glenn Beck was talkin' about 'em too.

I think it's all smoke and mirrors to distract from the fact that we ain't gettin' our money back.

Yeah, what the hell? I left eight years ago and this state had a great legislature, now I come back and they're passing bills about bling-bling spinner hubcaps, showing underwear in public, and ex-post-taxto laws charging extra "fees" on people with license demerits? Wow. I'm missing Vance Wilkins more and more. I don't think ol' Buster would've let this crap get through the House of Delegates.

I'm telling you, give Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria (plus Montgomery and Prince George's up across the Potomac) over to the District, and let 'em all have a fun time screwing up their own state instead of Virginia and Maryland!

}:-)4

(The fact that I just got busted in December for doing 68 in a 55 on US 29 outside Chatham has nothing to do with my interest in this. Nope. Nosiree Bob, not a bit.)
