NEW YORK (AP) - Civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart has been convicted of helping an imprisoned radical sheik communicate with his terrorist followers on the outside.
Sentencing guidelines should require her to do some time, and with a Felony Conviction, disbarrment is automatic.
NEW YORK (AP) -- A veteran civil rights lawyer was convicted Thursday of crossing the line by smuggling messages of violence from one of her jailed clients -- a radical Egyptian sheik -- to his terrorist disciples on the outside. The jury has been deliberating off-and-on over the past month in the case of Lynne Stewart, 65, a firebrand, left-wing activist known for representing radicals and revolutionaries in her 30 years on the New York legal scene. The jury deliberated 13 days in all. Stewart faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of giving material support to terrorists and defrauding the U.S. government. The trial focused attention on the line between zealous advocacy and criminal behavior by a lawyer. Some defense lawyers saw the case as a government warning to attorneys to tread carefully in terrorism cases. The jury also convicted a U.S. postal worker, Ahmed Abdel Sattar, of plotting to "kill and kidnap persons in a foreign country" by publishing an edict urging the killing of Jews and their supporters. A third defendant, Arabic interpreter Mohamed Yousry, was convicted of providing material support to terrorists. Sattar could face life in prison and Yousry up to 20 years. (HMTL challenged so you'll have to use your imagination to picture Monty Burns)
Are court system worked. Let's hope she gets the 20 years .
A prison sentence? She deserves a one way ticket to the ultimate judge for a more lasting sentence.
And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
The Pharisees were "doctors of the law", which I suppose was the contemporary equivalent of a J.D.
And yeah, I'm another one that these jokers are making look bad . . . :-(
Lets hope so.
A Traitor being convicted is good news.
A Traitor receiving the death penalty would be better.
"They're trying to come through the back door with some new theory which is difficult even for lawyers to understand ... I'm going to keep on fighting..." -Lynne Stewart
They will. But the sheik will turn into a Hitler wannabe and the muslims will be come National Socialists.
Beaming like an idiot with a picture of Castro behind her. Perfect.
This is great news, especially that all three of them were found guilty. I hope the translator goes away for the max, too. It should be a warning to translators everywhere.
I say this as a translator who has seen all too many translators who clearly have an agenda, and it's not one that favors their adopted country (the US, that is).
She looks like this moron professor I had who couldn't follow her own syllabus or keep track of her grades. She's probably just as doltish as well.
Good grief. Do they make prison cells big enough to hold somebody like that?
If there is, charge Jeanean Garafolo too.
