I'm going to be taking a bit of an extended break from Free Republic, and I'd like to offer the Ham Radio Ping List to anyone who may be interested in its upkeep.
The list has been a low-volume one since I created it, but the new admin would of course be free to maintain it any way he or she wished.
Reply here or Freepmail me and I'll send you the text file containing the list and the ping banner.

OK, Freeps, I've been a ham radio neophyte since I was 12. Belonged to a ham radio club when I was a kid, but never got my license. My father was an AM radio broadcaster for 45 years. Classic, old school, suit-and-tie radio professional. I grew up in radio stations. Literally - spent endless evenings as a kid inside them, making demo tapes, playing gofer, ripping the news off of the teletype(!), assisting the engineer, subbing for the DJ when he was in on 'the throne', reading PSA's, swapping carts, going by the rotation chart, the works. Got my 3rd class RT ticket on Groundhog Day, '79. But, I never got my amateur license. I find myself at a point in life where I want to get into it again, and want to get my technician's license. I've been online, taking practice tests, and for as long as it's been since I've delved into it, I've surprised myself with how much I've retained. Any advice/encouragement from you would be greatly appreciated.

The good news is the test isn't any harder than the practice tests, and a few bucks will buy you a license good for 10 years. The bad news is that they too want your Identity Theft Number, um, that's Socialist Insecurity number. (You can thank John McCain for that.)
Been a ham for decades, not too active now, but really like the ability to communicate when the electricity, phone lines, and cell phone control towers are all dead.

Impressive. I started fiddling with ham gear as a freshman in college. My room mate was a ham, and we built a 200 watt SSB transmitter in our dorm room. You won't have any problems with the test.
I took (and passed) the Tech test about six months ago. I took the on-line tests about 30 times, printed each and highlighted the ones I missed and used them as a study guide. I went through the whole stack about an hour before the test.
I would like to get my General "one of these days", but recently have been involved in a 12 week training class for CERT - Citizens Emergency Response Team - which has need of hams. Just took a tornado spotting class from NWS/NOAH last weekend. My church organized a ham network some time ago for emergency notification. I also discovered there is a small group of hams where I work that performs emergency services as needed. Seems like there is more demand than I would have expected.

I was Skywarn certified for quite a while - had all the advanced classes under my belt when I lived in Virginia. Got them all - drove from the NWS field office in Sterling to LaPlata, MD to attend classes. In fact, I had quite the diverse background in college with the sciences - Meteorology 101, Oceanograhpy 103, eight hours of biology, Chem 101, and the like. I also hold FEMA certifications in hurricane preparedness (among others) and (for what it's worth) an online Meteorology proficiency certification from the Altacert Institute. If I wasn't such a piss-poor math student, I'd be a meteorologist. I've always had an obsession with the weather. I also discovered that NOAA has quite a bit of online course and certification material, if you dig deeply enough.
