WASHINGTON, Feb. 14 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Robert Bonelli, 24, a troubled young adult with a collection of Columbine memorabilia in his home, opened fire Sunday on shoppers at a mall in New York with an AK-47 clone assault rifle.

Where did he get the gun? Wherever he wanted to. On the same day he walked into the Best Buy store at the Hudson Valley Mall, gun sellers across America were offering weapons so powerful and advanced that they have been the subject of recent global security complaints by the United States government.

The same day Bonelli shot two shoppers in New York, arms merchants at a gun show just outside Washington, D.C. offered for sale not only AK-47s and other clones like the Hesse Arms Model 47 Bonelli brandished, but also 50-caliber sniper rifles, capable of penetrating an airliner or a nuclear reactor from half a mile away and costing $25,000. Michael Barnes, the President of the Brady Campaign, attended "The Nation's Gun Show" at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, Virginia and inspected the 50-caliber rifle. Barnes noted that not only were many AK-47s and Ak-47 copycat weapons for sale, but also conversion kits to allow the guns to operate as machine guns.

While these weapons are available readily across America, American foreign policy experts have been pursuing complaints about sales of the same weapons to Venezuela and Iran. Last Friday, the Washington Times reported that the U.S. has lodged a formal protest with Russia for agreeing to sell more than 100,000 AK-47 assault rifles to the government of Venezuela. The action comes just four months after the Bush Administration let the ten- year-old Federal ban on assault weapons, including the AK-47, expire. And today the Associated Press reported that the U.S. is concerned about an Austrian company selling 800 50-caliber rifles to Iran. The weapon is legal in the U.S., except in California.

"It is painful hypocrisy," said Barnes, a former member of Congress with considerable expertise in foreign affairs. "It must be very difficult for our State Department negotiators to try to explain our objections to these global transactions with a straight face."

Okay, the above article references the gunshow this last weekend in Chantilly Virginia. I was there and as sad as I am to say it, there were no .50 BMG rifles at the show. The only example of any firearm that shot this cartridge was a M2HB tripod mounted machine gun.

There were plenty of AK-47 style semi-automatic rifles there but I could not find any full auto parts kits.

I seriously doubt Michael Barnes attended the show and I challenge him to prove that he did.

I really get tired of the blatent lies put forth by the anti-gun zeolots. This time, I think I'm going to put their backs to the wall a little bit.

It is the lies that have caused so many to leave the old media and start looking to us in the new media, FR, online papers, talk radio, fox, etc.

Most liberals and anti-second amendment leftist KNOW LITTLE OR NOTHING ABOUT FIRE-ARMS. They run on pure fright and emotion, like most liberals. I have been a gun-collector, competitive shooter and hunter all my life and when I read this crap these ignorant losers come up with, it is why I am a life member in the NRA. The anti-constitution socialists keep trying to snuff our sencond amendment rights due to politically-driven fright of an armed public, a public capable of defending itself against THEIR tyranny. There is no other plausible reason to infringe upon the RIGHTS OF LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS.

Where did he get the gun?

Out of the trunk of a cadillac in Harlem, would be my guess.

""troubled young adult with a collection of Columbine memorabilia in his home""

This is the troubling part. Forget about where he got it or how or what the gun was.

"...50-caliber sniper rifles, capable of penetrating an airliner or a nuclear reactor from half a mile away and costing $25,000."

My Barrett M82A1 .50cal BMG cost new $7,900 and the Leupold Glass cost $1,350. It won't penetrate a nuke's 6ft of concrete but will be accurate out to 2,000+ meters.

More lib-dem lies from Michael Barnes, buttswab.

There are alot of whackos in our society, and it keeps getting worse. Lots of them who are right on the edge of doing something bad. And you cannot stop them by taking away the rights of NORMAL, LAW-ABIDING people. If they want to hurt someone, they will, regardless. Firearms, like any other item, can be purchased ANYWHERE for the right price from the right people, legal or not. That too is my point.

50-caliber sniper rifles, capable of penetrating an airliner or a nuclear reactor from half a mile away

Somebody needs to respond to this, as it's totaly poppycock. A typical reactor containment building consists of a four foot thick reinforced concrete shell, followed by several 3/8" steel plates, followed by an ELEVEN foot thick reinforced concrete inner containment building. There is no way that any .50 cal round is going to penetrate that, and in fact, neither would a 777 airliner.

Where did he get the gun? Wherever he wanted to.

I see lots of anti-gun propaganda in this article, but no facts about how he got his weapon, or what the killer's motivations were.

This story reads more like a liberal anti-Second Amendment article rather than a report about a shooting.

Hey, the writer of the story forgot to use the words, "evil," "Christians," and "red-neck Republicans!" I guess the WP will fix that in editorial rewrite.

Are the AK-47s being sold to Venezuela true "assault weapons" (selective fire)?
Or are they similar to those available in the U.S. (semi-auto only)?

Let 'em spew this crap. It was the same anti-2A propaganda that opened my eyes about the Dem's back in the late 70's. I didn't really understand economics, and had fairly liberal social views, but a shooter/hunter since pre-teen days.

I use the anti-2A stuff on my blue collar friends, and teenage friends of my kids. They can get their arms around that issue, and I've probably converted 20 people by using 2A as the primer.

Let 'em spew. It's their own petards they be hoisting themselves upon.

Yeah, he does. I've sent the article to those who can really put pressure out there on Barnes. Hopefully, we can make him squirm a bit.
