Senate Judiciary Chair Arlen Specter says he has cancer (Hodgkin's disease)

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said Wednesday he has been diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer. Specter is expected to receive chemotherapy every two weeks over the next 24 to 32 weeks at the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania. A statement from the senator's office said he expects to be able to continue to serve as chairman during his treatment. "Senator Specter has an excellent chance of being completely cured of his Hodgkin's disease," his doctor said.

Although I wanted to see Specter go, it was NOT like this.

Good luck in your treatment Arlen, even those of us Toomey supporters are behind you on this one!

Prayers for the senator and anyone dealing with this challenge. Second thought is: isn't amazing how God does work.

The good news is that Hodgkin's, when caught early enough, is one of the more treatable forms of cancer. Prayers and best wishes on their way, regardless.

Perhaps it would be wise for Senator Specter to (ahem) 'temporarily' step aside as chairman of the SJC, and perhaps someone could 'temporarily' fill his role, like Senator Cornyn of Texas, or Brownback of Kansas, and of course Arlen would be welcome to sit in on any meetings of the committee while he undergoes chemotherapy, but to be sure that he isn't overly stressed from such a regimen, the (ahem) 'temporary' chairman would probably be happy to serve until say,,,the end of 2008!

It's the least we can do for Pennsylvania's senior Senator. ;)

One thing to consider -when one knows they are possibly very soon to face judgment they tend to reconcile their beliefs and actions...

I had Hodgkins about 18 years ago, stage 3. If it's caught then or earlier the prognosis is good. (Mine was 80% positive--I preferred not to think of it as 20% negative.)

I pray for his recovery. But I am also concerned about the judiciary committee schedule. We simply can't afford to delay the process, because we only have four years.

My experience is that the chemo knocks you out completely for at least one day, with extreme nausea and sleepiness. Then you can function pretty nearly normally for the next couple of weeks, until it's time to take your next shots.

Hopefully Specter can handle it. I don't want to sound cruel, but the lives of the unborn depend on confirming these judges without delay or undue hitches.

Considering there's a RAT in the governor's office in Pennsylvania, I'm hoping for 2 things; Specter recovers fully, and he sees it as a sign to not run again (of course, if a Pubbie were to get office in, say, 2006, a retirement when that Pubbie takes office would be nice).

Many of us knew Specter looked awful during the last campaign. It was mentioned frequently. I am betting he knew long before this that he had the disease. Good luck to him and I hope he is able to beat it. Bob Casey Jr. is waiting in the wings for a senate seat. He will be tough to beat

He had that thing growing on his nose a couple months ago. It was competing for its own zipcode, but the thing on John Edwards' lip got the last available one.

May he recover soon, and lead the charge to confirm ALL of President Bush's
judicial nominees.

I've checked. Specter can sue his physician under an obscure Polish law. And guess who will be waiting for Specter on the other side to claw his eyes out??? Holly Maddux. Come to think of it, she'll have to ask God for a hall pass to Hell so she can do the job!

Spector's term does not expire until 2011 (2010 election). Pray for his speedy recovery and full health. Any retirement before 1/2011 would lead to an appointment by the governor. I don't remember if they have to stand for election at the next election (2006 or 2008) or not. (I'm sure someone will clarify that point.)

I certainly did not say or infer that. My family has been seriously touched by this disease, and I can wish him well in his struggle to beat this horrible illness, while at the same time being honest in my low opinion of his senatorial record and propensities.
