Earth First! holding event this weekend in county (WATERMELONS Gather to plot next ECOTerror Act)

TOMBSTONE - The self-described "radical environmental" organization Earth First! will hold its winter organizers' conference today through Monday near Middlemarch Road in the Dragoon Mountains.

Attendees will begin gathering in their campsites this afternoon, with dinner planned at 6 p.m.

Saturday's sessions are devoted to "Alienation and Connection." A trip is planned early Sunday morning to the Willcox Playa to observe sandhill cranes, followed by an afternoon sessions on how to work on environmental campaigns with indigenous groups and "rural folk." The latter session will be conducted by local residents Jean Eisenhower and Asante Riverwind of the Chiracahua-Dragoon Alliance.

The evening will wind up with a session titled "Where do we go from here?" and planning for a "day of action" Monday in Tucson. Carpools will leave for Tucson at 10 a.m. Monday.

The organization's Tucson office did not respond to inquiries Thursday, but its Web site said: "We do not seem to be winning. Every day that goes by, we have less and less to lose. Even our 'radical communities' are unsustainable and unsatisfying. Depression and hopelessness loom, and we are tired of having the same old disjointed arguments. To start this weekend off, instead of debating theory or strategy, we want to have conversations that we have skipped."

That is pretty chilling. Jim Jones, David Koresh and Heavens Gate comes to mind. I hope that when the followers of the religion of Deep Ecology commit their defining act, they don't take any innocent lives.

Why is the group named "Earth First"? I thought liberals didn't like competition. Doesn't this indicate that the earth has beaten out competitors to come in "First"?

Maybe "Earth Tied" or "Earth, We're Getting There!" or maybe even "We Like the Earth But Animals are OK Too!".
