School wants $52,000 for expenses related to suit against former professor. The University of Colorado is asking for more than $52,000 from Ward Churchill to recover costs the school incurred fighting a lawsuit filed by the former ethnic studies professor. The total tab, filed in Denver District Court last week, includes individual expenses ranging from $2 for courthouse parking to $22,095 for "in-trial video and visual exhibits." "The university believes that what we've filed is both fair and appropriate for some of the expenses that we incurred during the trial," said Ken McConnellogue, spokesman for the University of Colorado system....

Ward Churchill (remember him?) references the book, Smallpox and the American Indian, during his testimony in his civil suit against the University of Colorado at the City and County Building in Denver, Colorado March 23, 2009. Churchill is suing the University of Colorado for wrongful termination. AP photo. Today, I picked up 2 kids I carpool to the gymnastics club from their magnet school, as I do every Monday. Apparently, there was no mention about Columbus Day. Nada. Zippo. Nothing negative or positive. But they did watch a performance by dancers dressed like Mayan/Aztec Indians; and the older one said...

CALDWELL, Idaho – While the national media wonder what Sarah Palin’s doing and what she’ll do next, she’s holed up working on her book, her father said Friday. “Sarah’s been out of town for almost a month now,” said Chuck Heath, who is on a campaign swing through Idaho for GOP congressional candidate Vaughn Ward. “I don’t know exactly where she is, but she’s writing her book. She e-mails me quite frequently. She asks, ‘Oh, what happened on June 13, 1978?’ This is material for her book.” Palin, the former Alaska governor whose turn as John McCain’s running mate last year...

Political newcomer Vaughn Ward basked in some star power as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's father and father-in-law began a three-day swing for his congressional campaign in Meridian on Thursday. Ward, 40, of Eagle, is an Iraq War veteran. Born in Twin Falls and a Boise State grad, he returned to Idaho in 2007. He was working on the 2008 McCain-Palin campaign in Nevada when he met Palin's father, Chuck Heath, an Idaho native, and Todd Palin's dad, Jim. They back Ward's bid to be the GOP challenger to Democrat Walt Minnick in 2010

BOISE, Idaho — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's father and father-in-law will campaign in Idaho for Republican congressional candidate Vaughn Ward. That's where Ward met Chuck Heath, Palin's father and a former Idaho resident, and Jim Palin, her father-in-law. Campaign events are slated for Boise, Sandpoint, Wallace and Coeur d'Alene, from Aug. 27 to Aug. 29. Ward spokesman Ryan O'Barto says, "They're going to be talking about how Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi are taking our country in the wrong direction." Ward...

Vaughn Ward, a former Marine who led a combat tour in Fallujah, Iraq and current GOP House candidate in Idaho, says that "two Alaskans" are coming to campaign for him. ..... Two of his donors are Jim and Faye Palin of Wasilla, Alaska — the father-in-law and mother-in-law of former GOP vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin. Which suggests he might have a connection or two up in that state.

(This is part 2 of an article.) Recently neo-fascists opposed to Sonia Sotomayor, Barack Obama’s nominee to the United States Supreme Court, have argued that she doesn’t respect the “sanctity” of the law and chooses instead to be guided by her personal beliefs. But if there is such a thing as “sanctity” of the law, why are so many Supreme Court cases decided by five-four votes split along ideological lines? Where is this concern when self-loathing Clarence Thomas uses his experiences at Yale University, not the law, to dismantle affirmative action programs, or when Antonin Scalia unethically hears cases where...

Ward Churchill could find himself on the hook for up to $50,000 in out-of-pocket costs the University of Colorado incurred fighting the lawsuit the former ethnic studies professor filed against it, CU's lead attorney said Wednesday. CU attorney Patrick O'Rourke said he plans to file for recovery of those costs -- which include flying witnesses in and out of Colorado and creating deposition transcripts -- over the next 15 days and said the amount would be in the "five figures" and likely just shy of $50,000. "We've got to go through and add it up -- it's not a staggering...

All eyes will be on Chief Denver District Judge Larry Naves on Wednesday as he takes arguments at an all-day hearing for and against giving ousted professor Ward Churchill his job back at the University of Colorado. The hearing is the culmination of a lengthy dispute between CU and the controversial professor, who was fired two years ago. The judge has the option of ruling from the bench at the end of the hearing or issuing a written decision later. Neither the judge’s clerk nor the attorneys in the case would hazard a guess as to when Naves might announce...

Richard Thill's high school education was interrupted by the largest war the world had ever seen. But Wednesday — almost 70 years later — it came full-circle for Thill, when he was awarded an honorary diploma from Humboldt Senior High School. The honor came as a surprise to Thill, and he was visibly grateful — his voice began to shake, tears welled in his eyes. It was something he had been thinking about for a very long time. 'I'm really proud — boy, you can't believe,' said Thill, 85, holding the diploma. 'I'm going to frame this and have it...

An attorney is threatening legal action if the University of Colorado doesn't waive a $3,000 fee for student groups hosting an appearance by former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers and fired CU professor Ward Churchill. CU spokesman Bronson Hilliard said it's standard to charge student groups fees to recoup security costs for large events. He said the $3,000 charge is toward the lower end of what the school charges.

Weather Underground co-founder Bill Ayers, a lightning rod of controversy during last year's presidential election, will visit the University of Colorado next month to speak in support of Ward Churchill just days before the fired professor's lawsuit against CU goes to trial. CU fired Churchill in 2007 after the university concluded he plagiarized and lied about historical facts in his writings. Churchill, however, claims he lost his job over a controversial essay about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He sued the university to get his job back; that lawsuit goes to trial in Denver on March 9. Ayers made...

Former Gov. Bill Owens said in a deposition it's a good thing the University of Colorado ignored him when he urged that professor Ward Churchill be fired over a controversial essay. "I'm glad that the university, its counsel, and others who had a chance over a period of years to look at the law and look at the case didn't follow my advice and, in fact, chose to ignore it," Owens said in the deposition, taken one week ago today. Had CU fired Churchill for the essay - as Owens wanted - the school would have violated Churchill's free-speech rights,...

Former guv, deposed for trial, calls Churchill 'a plagiarist and a fraud'. Former Gov. Bill Owens on Friday compared one-time University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill to a famous moviemaker - and it wasn't a compliment. "In retirement, he's starting to look a lot like Michael Moore," Owens and others, including University of Colorado regents, are being deposed as part of the trial, scheduled to start March 9 in Denver District Court. Owens declined to discuss in detail what kinds of questions he was asked and what answers he gave, but Owens wasn't shy about expressing his opinion of Churchill....

Some University of Colorado faculty members say they’re saddled by useless rules, and they want school leaders to abandon mandatory information-technology training, tight alcohol policies and an extra layer of tenure review. Members of the Boulder Faculty Assembly’s executive committee on Monday signaled their support for a report that recommends the university revise, or scrap altogether, a batch of its rules — some that came about in the aftermath of controversy and during former CU President Hank Brown’s tenure. When President Bruce Benson went through a vetting process last spring before he was hired, CU employees repeatedly told him in...

In it he said Christopher was "a compassionate, respectful and generous man." "Mr....

We learned yesterday that veterans of the United States Army and Marine Corps who have fought for their country and have been awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, the Navy Cross and other decorations are too controversial to be allowed inside a public high school in Minnesota... SMSU is a public, taxpayer-funded institution, just like Forest Lake High School. Forest Lake students who go there will be safe, no doubt, from whatever dangers are posed by touring veterans who want to talk about their experiences in America's armed forces. But ... The Sesquicentennial, if you missed the reference, is...

The federal child-pornography charges filed against former radio talk show host Bernie Ward came about after he engaged in sex chats with an online dominatrix and allegedly sent her pictures of children engaged in sexual activity, according to a police report released Friday. The woman, who lives in Oakdale (Stanislaus County), became concerned after Ward allegedly sent her pictures in December 2004 showing children "engaged in or simulating sexual acts with adults or other children," Oakdale police Officer Benjamin Savage wrote in a report. An America Online chat-room user by the name of Vincentlio engaged in sexually explicit chats with...

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors: On two separate occasions in 2007, your august body attempted to condemn radio talk show host Michael Savage for his conservative positions on rule of law and Islamic sponsored terrorism. In August, your efforts were thwarted by Ed Jew, a board member of Chinese descent whose grandfather came to America seven decades ago. Unfortunately, Mr. Jew is no longer a member of the board, and was not there in October when your board passed a resolution condemning Michael Savage. First of all, congratulations seem in order. University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill was fired by the Board of Regents in July. But that didn't stop Churchill from still teaching at CU this week. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, a group of student supporters rented out a classroom at CU's Eaton Humanities Building and invited Churchill to teach. The topic? "ReVisioning American History: Colonization, Genocide and Formation of the U.S. Settler State." And it appears this isn't a one-time-only event.

Fired University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill will return to the Boulder campus next week to begin teaching an unsanctioned course that's being organized by his student supporters. University officials have distanced themselves from the planned lecture series — slated to begin Tuesday night — and say that Churchill remains terminated. The students organizing Churchill's teachings say the series is intended for those who "missed out" on his years as an American Indian studies professor and as head of the ethnic studies department at CU. Churchill's supporters can hold the classes on campus because the university allows student groups to...

School officials responded Tuesday, saying the regents have immunity from a lawsuit over their decision to fire...

THE UNIVERSITY of Colorado Board of Regents finally pulled the trigger and voted to fire the disgraceful Professor Ward Churchill. Churchill first came to the nation’s attention when he called the victims of the 9/11 attacks “little Eichmanns,” referring to Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi who oversaw Hitler’s “final solution” to execute all the Jews in Europe. But it wasn’t that comment that caused Professor Churchill’s firing this week. It was his phoney research and his plagiarism. The Regents’ action on Tuesday followed thorough reviews by other members of the CU faculty and then the recommendation by CU President Hank Brown...

The average age of members of the U.S. Senate is older than it has ever been, according to Senate Historian Richard Baker. For many senators, advanced age is starting to show, raising questions about their ability to govern. Until his retirement last month, former majority leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., a noted heart surgeon, was being consulted for informal medical advice by two dozen of his colleagues -- more than 20 percent of the Senate, according to a former leadership aide. They went to Frist complaining about a host of illnesses and chronic maladies, most related to aging. Among them were...

Professor Suing To Get Legal Fees from CU. A judge Wednesday refused to stop dismissal proceedings against a University of Colorado professor accused of research misconduct after he filed a lawsuit seeking $20,000 in legal fees from the school. Denver District Judge Stephen Phillips agreed with university attorney Patrick O'Rourke who argued that ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill would still be able to seek attorneys' fees and lost wages if he successfully fights to keep his job. Churchill has denied the allegations and is appealing a recommendation by university officials that he be fired. Churchill's attorney, David Lane, asked Phillips...

Professor's fate may not be decided until well into next year. The University of Colorado's efforts to fire Ward Churchill are on hold because of a dispute over whether the university has to come up with $20,000 in state funds for the professor's defense. Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said a lawsuit to get the money could be filed by next week. Meantime, there's been no progress on Churchill's appeal since August, and it could be well into 2007 before a final decision on his fate is made. CU spokeswoman Michele McKinney said the delay is outside of the administration's control....

An expert on academic freedom said Tuesday the University of Colorado should be held to a high standard of proof if it tries to punish an embattled professor on allegations of plagiarism. It's not always easy for university administrators to discern authentic Native professors from those who wish they were - or try to be. Ward Churchill of the University of Colorado tops the list of poseur professors. Throughout the years, he's become a magnet for lost Indians and Native romanticists. And on Tuesday, a CU committee recommended firing the ethnic studies professor for research misconduct. This is no light charge. It's the first time the CU Standing Committee on Research Misconduct has voted to ax...
