(05-08) 18:49 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Bernie Ward, the most prominent liberal voice on Bay Area talk radio for more than two decades, admitted Thursday to distribution of child pornography by e-mail in a plea deal that will send him to federal prison for at least five years. Ward, 57, a former Roman Catholic priest, was a fixture on KGO-AM 810 for three hours every weeknight, known in recent years for his fervent denunciations of President Bush and the war in Iraq during his news talk show. He also hosted "God Talk," a Sunday morning program on religion, and was...

We learned yesterday that veterans of the United States Army and Marine Corps who have fought for their country and have been awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, the Navy Cross and other decorations are too controversial to be allowed inside a public high school in Minnesota... SMSU is a public, taxpayer-funded institution, just like Forest Lake High School. Forest Lake students who go there will be safe, no doubt, from whatever dangers are posed by touring veterans who want to talk about their experiences in America's armed forces. But ... The Sesquicentennial, if you missed the reference, is...

The federal child-pornography charges filed against former radio talk show host Bernie Ward came about after he engaged in sex chats with an online dominatrix and allegedly sent her pictures of children engaged in sexual activity, according to a police report released Friday. The woman, who lives in Oakdale (Stanislaus County), became concerned after Ward allegedly sent her pictures in December 2004 showing children "engaged in or simulating sexual acts with adults or other children," Oakdale police Officer Benjamin Savage wrote in a report. An America Online chat-room user by the name of Vincentlio engaged in sexually explicit chats with...

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The ABC7 I-Team has the inside story of what lead up to the arrest of popular talk-radio host, Bernie Ward, on federal child pornography charges. It's an investigation you'll see Only On 7. We warn you that some of the information is graphic. Bernie Ward got indicted in December and got fired from his job at KGO Radio, effective at the end of last year. Now, police reports just obtained by the I-Team tell us who blew the whistle on Ward, and how he came to send the woman child porn, by his own admission. The...

SAN FRANCISCO -- Former radio talk show host Bernie Ward was given a date of June 9 in federal court in San Francisco on Thursday for a trial on charges of receiving and distributing child pornography on his computer. The trial date was set by U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, who also scheduled a hearing on pretrial motions for April 24. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors: On two separate occasions in 2007, your august body attempted to condemn radio talk show host Michael Savage for his conservative positions on rule of law and Islamic sponsored terrorism. In August, your efforts were thwarted by Ed Jew, a board member of Chinese descent whose grandfather came to America seven decades ago. Unfortunately, Mr. Jew is no longer a member of the board, and was not there in October when your board passed a resolution condemning Michael Savage. First of all, congratulations seem in order. Most municipal governments...

The KGO host and former priest faces a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill was fired by the Board of Regents in July. But that didn't stop Churchill from still teaching at CU this week. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, a group of student supporters rented out a classroom at CU's Eaton Humanities Building and invited Churchill to teach. The topic? "ReVisioning American History: Colonization, Genocide and Formation of the U.S. Settler State." And it appears this isn't a one-time-only event.

Fired University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill will return to the Boulder campus next week to begin teaching an unsanctioned course that's being organized by his student supporters. University officials have distanced themselves from the planned lecture series — slated to begin Tuesday night — and say that Churchill remains terminated. The students organizing Churchill's teachings say the series is intended for those who "missed out" on his years as an American Indian studies professor and as head of the ethnic studies department at CU. Churchill's supporters can hold the classes on campus because the university allows student groups to...

The ethnic studies professor filed a complaint in July saying his First Amendment rights were violated when he was fired for research misconduct. He is seeking reinstatement. The University of Colorado filed motions Tuesday asking a Denver district judge to dismiss former CU professor Ward Churchill's lawsuit against the school. Churchill, who taught ethnic studies, filed a complaint in July, charging that the regents and the school violated his First Amendment rights to free speech and denied him due process in his termination. School officials responded Tuesday, saying the regents have immunity from a lawsuit over their decision to fire...

THE UNIVERSITY of Colorado Board of Regents finally pulled the trigger and voted to fire the disgraceful Professor Ward Churchill. Churchill first came to the nation’s attention when he called the victims of the 9/11 attacks “little Eichmanns,” referring to Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi who oversaw Hitler’s “final solution” to execute all the Jews in Europe. But it wasn’t that comment that caused Professor Churchill’s firing this week. It was his phoney research and his plagiarism. The Regents’ action on Tuesday followed thorough reviews by other members of the CU faculty and then the recommendation by CU President Hank Brown...

U.S. President George W. Bush on Tuesday nominated Army Gen. William Ward, the highest ranking black in the U.S. military, to lead the new Africa Command and coordinate military operations on the continent. Bush's decision in February to create Africa Command came after months of discussion inside the Pentagon and reflected increasing U.S. strategic interest in the continent and worry that Islamic militants were finding safe haven there. Ward, who must be confirmed by the Senate, is only the fifth black man to attain a fourth star, making him a full general. "I am honored by President Bush's and (Defense)...

June 26, 1975: A date not easily forgotten by FBI Agents. On that horrible day, Special Agents Ron Williams and Jack Coler were gunned down in an open meadow on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Following the initial hail of fire from the assailants, three gunmen approached the injured Agents and finished them off at close range. Ron Williams and Jack Coler are known as Service Martyrs, a special designation reserved for Federal Agents who gave their lives while engaged in direct adversarial action. Their sacrifice is also remembered as the only two Agents in Bureau history to...

A little twinge of anxiety always hits the community when the new neighbors move in. What do they do for a living? What kind of music do they listen to? Are they sociable or are they loners? The average age of members of the U.S. Senate is older than it has ever been, according to Senate Historian Richard Baker. For many senators, advanced age is starting to show, raising questions about their ability to govern. Until his retirement last month, former majority leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., a noted heart surgeon, was being consulted for informal medical advice by two dozen of his colleagues -- more than 20 percent of the Senate, according to a former leadership aide. They went to Frist complaining about a host of illnesses and chronic maladies, most related to aging. Among them were...

Professor Suing To Get Legal Fees from CU. A judge Wednesday refused to stop dismissal proceedings against a University of Colorado professor accused of research misconduct after he filed a lawsuit seeking $20,000 in legal fees from the school. Denver District Judge Stephen Phillips agreed with university attorney Patrick O'Rourke who argued that ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill would still be able to seek attorneys' fees and lost wages if he successfully fights to keep his job. Churchill has denied the allegations and is appealing a recommendation by university officials that he be fired. Churchill's attorney, David Lane, asked Phillips...

Professor's fate may not be decided until well into next year. The University of Colorado's efforts to fire Ward Churchill are on hold because of a dispute over whether the university has to come up with $20,000 in state funds for the professor's defense. Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said a lawsuit to get the money could be filed by next week. Meantime, there's been no progress on Churchill's appeal since August, and it could be well into 2007 before a final decision on his fate is made. CU spokeswoman Michele McKinney said the delay is outside of the administration's control....

An expert on academic freedom said Tuesday the University of Colorado should be held to a high standard of proof if it tries to punish an embattled professor on allegations of plagiarism. A faculty committee is investigating research misconduct charges against Ward Churchill, a tenured professor of ethnic studies who first came under fire for likening Sept. 11 victims to an infamous Nazi. "The burden of proof should be a very high standard," said Jonathan Knight, director of academic freedom and tenure programs for the American Association of University Professors. Churchill has confirmed that a subcommittee of the university's Standing...

"This is not a problem that is attached to the entire ethnic studies department — just a not-so-good professor and he doesn't deserve to be employed here," ... "He takes away from...

Moreover, students at Princeton took the Bill, converted it into a Student Bill of Rights, and passed it by a vote of the student body. It's not always easy for university administrators to discern authentic Native professors from those who wish they were - or try to be. Ward Churchill of the University of Colorado tops the list of poseur professors. Throughout the years, he's become a magnet for lost Indians and Native romanticists. But his disputed personal claim of being Cherokee falls below a damning list of professional problems. And on Tuesday, a CU committee recommended firing the ethnic studies professor for research misconduct. This is no light charge. It's the first time the CU Standing Committee on Research Misconduct has voted to ax...

Ward Churchill, the pugnacious professor of ethnic studies, insists that scholars who rebuked him for falsification, fabrication and plagiarism just don't understand his discipline. Churchill is, of course, the University of Colorado professor whose misconduct was "deliberate and not a matter of an occasional careless error," a CU investigative panel has concluded. The panel also condemned Churchill for "serious deviation" from accepted research practices. In turn, Churchill and his righteous entourage insist that he's been targeted because of his "alternative historical perspective." Churchill complains that "individuals knowledgeable in my discipline" were excluded from the panel and that he had to...

Ethnic studies — a relatively new field — could be harmed by the plagiarized passages and made-up facts discovered in University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill's work, a panel found. But scholars of ethnic studies, and those who have been closely watching the investigation, have varying opinions on whether there will be a "Churchill effect" on the field. The stinging report that became public last week rejected Churchill's assertion that there are different research standards for ethnic studies scholars. Panel members also found that the tenured professor strayed from the "bedrock principles" of scholarship. The five-member investigative panel arrived at...

Author says CU prof used picture of hers without permission... The photograph of a child's grave in University of Colorado ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill's 2004 book about Indian boarding schools jumped out at Brenda Child. That's because Child, a member of the Red Lake Ojibwa tribe, took the picture and published it in 1998 in her own award-winning book on the same subject. "I was surprised that was there because he's never sought my permission to use it and it appeared without my knowing that it would be in his book," said Child, a University of Minnesota faculty member...
