East High forms Gay/Straight Alliance club

By Becky Orr rep6@wyomingnews.com Published in the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle

CHEYENNE - A new Gay/Straight Alliance established at Cheyenne's East High met for the first time Friday at the school.

The organization is the first of its kind in Laramie County School District 1.

Thirty-three people attended the organizational meeting - 30 of them students and the rest employees - said Donna Lucas, a group faculty sponsor.

She is a student assistance counselor at East High who works through the Safe and Drug-Free Schools program. Phil Newland, the other sponsor, was out of town on a school event. Students asked Lucas to be a sponsor, she said.

Lucas defined Friday's meeting as an icebreaker and a chance for people to consider the club's vision.

Although no decisions were made, the consensus called for more education for themselves and others, she said.

The school's television announcements carried information about the meeting, which experienced no problems or protests.

Lucas said she would not provide the names of the students who came to the meeting or the student organizers. Instead, she said, they should be asked first.

East High Principal Sam Mirich said the club is a student-driven organization proposed by students. The group has a constitution, and its organizers followed school board policy for setting up a group.

The group is a place for all students and staff to create and maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all young people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

"I think the focus is, for me at least, creating a safe environment for all our students here," Lucas said. "We want to make sure the gay students feel safe and welcome here."

The club also is aimed at protecting students from harassment and discrimination based on real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity, she said. The club is for all students.

Lucas said she's not aware of any event at school that prompted someone to form the group. Some students also wanted to start a chapter last year.

"I would rather we start it when there hasn't been anything happening than in response to something happening," she said.

"It's very important to let folks know the club is not promoting the (gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender) lifestyle," she said. "It's affirming, not promoting."

There are Gay/Straight Alliance groups at some other schools in Wyoming and Colorado.

Greg Tucker is an associate principal at East High who deals with the process of establishing clubs.

On Monday, the school's student council approved the club.

This is a student-driven organization, Mirich said. Faculty sponsors can attend meetings and serve in a nonparticipatory way.

LCSD1 Board President Jan Stalcup said Friday that as long as people are sponsoring the group and that there's no pressure on the students, it sounds like it's a recognized organization to her.

She said she wants to find out more details about the club, its goals and activities. She also wants to know how the process works through the activities association.

It looks like WY is about to shed its "conservative" image in the words of Bill Clinton, who never won the state, "sooner, rather than later."

"We want to make sure the gay students feel safe and welcome here."

Awwwwww, how touching. I wonder how "safe and welcome" they'd make a Christian group feel.

I think it time to eliminate all clubs and focus on pure academics, this is why we send our kids to school.

As it is written "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers
for what do righteousness and wickeness have in common?Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between christ and Belial?what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? (2 Cor.6:14,15 NIV) All
these so called Gay Straight alliances are = recruitment and deception. When an institution allows such alliances they are "already captured" and serve alongside the Sons of
Belial.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

Scripter, this would be a good thread to post a few links. We have a few new people on the ping list that may not have read the info about GLSEN.

If you want on/off the ping list see my profile page.

When the GSA first formed in my child's high school, I called the principal to request that I be the straight sponsor since the only other sponsor/teacher was gay. The principal wouldn't hear of it. The Gay/Straight thing is a cover for GAY only club or bi or however they want to package their sexcapade activities. Straight sponsors or members are not tolerated kindly (if at all). I don't know -- maybe it's me -- but I thought school was for academic pursuit -- as in exercising the MIND, using the BRAIN. Shows how off the wall I am.

Public schools are now officially sinkholes of the worst philosophy, worst ideas, and indoctrination centers of all manner of evil, particularly regarding sexual morality.

Parents and grandparents who care about their children's futures should rip them out of school now. Better yet, yesterday.
