A view from Mexico

Illegal immigration must stop, and it must stop at the U.S.-Mexico border. This is the opinion of a Mexican living in Mexico.

I understand people need jobs and have the right to look for a better life for their families, but we are overlooking the fundamental problem behind illegal immigration: the Mexican government and its inability to provide a decent life for its citizens.

In Mexico, politicians and elites have grown comfortable with the notion that they can get away with not working hard, not planning and not putting the people first because there's simply no accountability. They know that by exporting impoverished Mexicans, they won't have to face their discontent. And thanks to the billions that Pemex generates and the billions sent here from Mexicans working in the United States, they can keep the population stable enough to prevent social revolt.

The fact is, illegal immigration is hurting Mexico. While the $16 billion that Mexicans working in the United States sent home last year is good, it pales in comparison to the hundreds of billions of dollars that the Mexican economy could generate if politicians and elites would stop thinking about their pockets and work for change.

Mexican politicians need to feel social pressure to force them to change, and that's never going to happen until the border is closed so the Mexican government can face the music coming from the millions of hungry mouths of the people it has failed.

Close the border, ignore the rhetoric coming from the Mexican government and let us apply some pressure on our leaders. It's good for us, it's good for you and it's good for freedom, true freedom.

It's impossible to close the border.

As long as we need their labor and they need our jobs they will continue to find ways to get here.

The Tijuana border is already heavily fortified with fences, patrol roads, helicopters, ATV patrols, motion detectors, horse patrols, floodlights, UAVs...etc.... And still they come by the tens of thousands.

But if the people of California wanted to stop the laborers from coming they very easily could simply by busting the people who employ the illegal laborers.

President Bush has authorized state and local agencies to enforce immigration laws and has set up an 8 week training program to train them.

But the fact of life is that the people in California do not want to stop illegal immigrant ion.

The conservative posters from California have been complaining for years about illegal immigrants and not a single one of them has organized any type effort to get their local police to bust the employers.

I see. It's our fault that Mexico sucks because we don't spend hundreds of billions of dollars in a probably futile attempt to turn our border into a fortress.

What about the labor of LEGAL immigrants? Mexicans are welcome to come here. Just as long as they have papers.

Now some will say, but we need illegals to sustain the economy, migrant farmers and what have you. The truth is, while we may have less expensive food prices because of illegals we have much higher taxes paying for their healthcare ect. Illegals do not pay taxes.

As liberal as Mexico votes, the Democrats would probably welcome that.

You know, I get really sick of your
saying its impossible to close the border.
You have done this on other threads

No it is not.

Our military, and some kind of a guest worker
program in addition to enforcing laws that are
already in place to go after companies that hire
illegals is not impossible.

My concerns about the border have mainly to do with
not allowing terrorists in here.

Who knows who's crossed in here since 9/11.

It just takes DOING!

Mexicans are not the only immigrant group. We often forget that. I recently met a girl from Eastern Europe who immigrated here. My friend's parents are immigrants from Greece. Immigrants do not only come from Mexico.

"Illegals do not pay taxes."

Only a very few who are paid in cash, usually day laborers, do not pay income taxes. But their employers still pay income tax on the profits they make.

Plus illegals pay sales tax on everything they buy. Their landlord pays property taxes on the house they live in. They person who drives them to work pays gas taxes.

But most importantly, people who work contribute to our economic prosperity. If we didn't have enough employees, companies would have to move over seas or close down. Then all of their employees would suffer, along with the companies that supply them the raw products, and the local governments which are dependent upon the taxes the companies pay.

If we didn't need immigrant laborers they wouldn't be here.

Illegals do not pay social security. And they do not pay for their own health care, or for their children's education.

You make a very good point. They wouldn't pay property taxes anyway?

"But a majority of California's voters voiced their complaints about illegal immigration by passing Proposition 187 in 1994. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "

That was a symbolic feel-good act that didn't require any sacrifice on the part of the voters. Ask them if they want to close down the companies in their community that provide them jobs and pay the local taxes and see if they still want to get rid of illegal immigrants.

"" If we didn't have enough employees, companies would have to move over seas or close down. ""
