FORT WORTH, Texas - The ex-boyfriend of a missing pregnant woman has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the case of the woman and her 7-year-old son, whose bodies were found Tuesday, police said.
Bagel shop owner Lisa Underwood, seven months pregnant, and her son, Jayden, were reported missing after she failed to show up at her baby shower Saturday. A pool of blood was found in her home.
Fort Worth police Lt. Gene Jones said Tuesday that the bodies were found and that police would provide more details that afternoon at a news conference in Denton, about 30 miles northeast of Fort Worth, where Underwood's car was found Monday.
Stephen Barbee, 37, of Fort Worth, was arrested Monday night in Tyler and was being brought back to Tarrant County by Fort Worth police. His bail was set at $2 million.
On Monday, Underwood's sport utility vehicle was found partially submerged in a creek near Denton.
Acting on an anonymous tip, police searched a Fort Worth home during the night and found an item referred to by the tipster, but officials would not say what it was or how it figured in their investigation.
Jones said he didn't know why Barbee was in Tyler, how investigators knew to find him there or whether there were other suspects.
"We haven't established a motive, so I can't speak to that," Jones said.
"We know that at one time Mr. Barbee and Ms. Underwood were romantically involved. We don't know what the latest status of that relationship was," he said.
Jones said he didn't know who was the father of Underwood's fetus, but a neighbor of Underwood, Debbie Lindley, said it was Barbee.
Lindley said Underwood and Barbee split up last the fall because Barbee had another girlfriend, but she didn't know of any violent incidents between the couple.
Lindley said Underwood met Barbee about two years ago at the bagel shop. She said Jayden had never met Barbee; the boy always stayed at the Lindleys' home when the couple went on dates.

Texas Mom, Son's Bodies Found; Ex Charged ping.
A very sad end to this alert.
Sad TX news ping.
Bastard. If they can prove he did it, send him to the front of the execution line.
If he is found guilty hang the scum.
Texas justice will be swifter than California Justice would be.
Thanks, TexKat..been following this since it broke here..I had hoped for a miracle..Another father who needed to get rid of the "problem"...I can't imagine what kind of person could do this crime.Evil..
"If he is found guilty hang the scum."
By his unmentionables.
What I heard on the news, was the killer was NOT the father of the 7 yr old or the unborn baby, just an ex- ____________________ (insert profane name here).
He should be at the end of a rope.
They have not done the DNA but her friends said the suspect is the unborn baby's father.
As horrible as this kind of thing is, I dread watching it play out in the media. I hope this isn't another Lacy Peterson circus.
Why does the media grab some events and drive them into the ground, and totally ignore others.
Truly heartbreaking, my FRiend...
I never did get this.
Is setting a bail required in each and every criminal case?
The police did their job well & extremely fast. Excellent Work. Thanks FWPD.
If they have mothers, they must have fathers!
Info still spotty.... some are saying he's now charged with capital murder for the murder of three, the woman, her 7 yr son and the unborn....
Is setting a bail required in each and every criminal case?
Fetus? WTFO?
Could be, but the news at noon seemed to say he was not the father. Time will tell.
Untill recently barbee listed his parents home as his address. Also, in April 93 he was involved in a paternity suit with another woman.
I'm getting a sick feeling about this. Alleged perp lives with his girlfriend, and then his ex (who is 7 mos pregnant) is found dead, investigators found a "large pool of blood" in her house...to me, all those facts make this sound like another incident where a woman is killed and people try to remove the fetus from her (to raise as their own child).
This is Texas. The piece of filth will receive a fair trial and then will be dealt with accordingly.
Git th' rope!!!
A friend of the family was on the radio saying that the guy was the father of the unborn baby and that she had threatened to tell his wife if he didn't provide financial support and buy her a house.
I just heard a similar report a few minutes ago.
By his unmentionables.
Horrible.
This is happening more and more around the country.
why?
The root cause: 'Child Support'
son Jayden
As an aside, thats one of those trendy names I hate, like Aiden, Caitlin... the "long A" names...
RIP, Lisa and Jayden Underwood.
My wife and I independently settled on the name "Aidan" as a name we really liked, even before we got together. This was 10+ years ago, when "Aidan" was routinely about 65,000th on the most popular baby names list. Then the character from "Sex and the City" was named Aidan, and we knew we were in trouble. Before you know it, it's like the 7th most popular name. D'oh!
Now we just make stuff up when people ask what we're naming our first kid, i.e., "Mike, but with a silent G."
LOL, thats frickin brilliant!
I named my kid what I thought was a not too common name, but now I am hearing it everywhere only a couple of years later... rats...
California Justice? Well, we did just execute someone but, really, we take 20, 25 years at the rate we're going. It's absolutely abhorrently. Justice decades delayed is justice denied.</p>
I'm thankful that this crime happened down in Texas where the death penality is taken seriously.
The root cause, imo, is evil within the hearts of people.
Oh, stuff it.
The root cause is the s.o.b. is a murderer.
My good G-D!!!! I read I read I read I do not know why persons do this this is evil total evil
Thank you"Texkat"
No one is making excuses for the miserable SOB. They are saying that his motive for the killing was to avoid financial responsibility for his child.
That seems rather self-evident from what little we know it had something to do with money and/or perserving his marriage.
So the best way to eliminate these crimes is to let men run away from their pregnant girlfriends w/o paying anything to help raise the child? Um....
Oh be serious... Guy abducts and murders a pregnant woman and her son and its child supports fault? You are one sick twisted S.O.B. if you believe that.
This guys a murderer, pure and simple. If you are willing to kill you are willing to kill, regardless of what you think justifies it. A murderer is a murderer is a murderer... may this man die a death so slow and painful that the end will be a relief!
Then may God have mercy on his soul, because I certainly have none for him.
I know the real root cause is evil !
Just study past cases and you will find CS in the picture.
I don't understand your point--what's the solution if CS is the problem? Not enforcing it? It's there for a reason--the fact that some people resort to murder to avoid paying it simply means that they are evil. If I get a traffic ticket, freak out, and kill my neighbor, is "traffic law enforcement" the root cause??
Then just worry about the 'real' root cause and leave the convenient excuses out. I don't want to be too hard on you, but if we don't focus on the real problem, your wasting time.
You are NOT serious. You are only ATTEMPTING to start an argument. I do not think you took debating classes. If you did, did by any chance you fail?
