Pope Calls Gay Marriage Part of 'Ideology of Evil'

ROME (Reuters) - Homosexual marriages are part of "a new ideology of evil" that is insidiously threatening society, Pope John Paul says in a new book published Tuesday.

In "Memory and Identity," the Pope also calls abortion a "legal extermination" comparable to attempts to wipe out Jews and other groups in the 20th century.

He also reveals that he is convinced the Turkish gunman who shot him in 1981 did not act alone and suggests that the former Communist Bloc may have been behind the plot to kill him.

The 84-year-old Pontiff's book, a highly philosophical and intricate work on the nature of good and evil, is based on conversations with philosopher friends in 1993 and later with some of his aides.

In one section about the role of lawmakers, the Pope takes another swipe at gay marriages when he refers to "pressures" on the European Parliament to allow them.

"It is legitimate and necessary to ask oneself if this is not perhaps part of a new ideology of evil, perhaps more insidious and hidden, which attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man," he writes.

The Pope's fifth book for mass circulation, issued by Italian publisher Rizzoli, sparked controversy in Germany and elsewhere after Jewish groups protested against leaked excerpts comparing the Holocaust to abortion.

In at least two sections of the book, the Pope talks about the Nazi attempt to exterminate Jews and the wholesale slaughter of political opponents by Communist regimes after World War II.

"LEGAL EXTERMINATION"

In following paragraphs he says that legally elected parliaments in formerly totalitarian countries were today allowing what he called new forms of evil and new exterminations.

"There is still, however a legal extermination of human beings who have been conceived but not yet born," he writes.

A sad, sad day for Catholic In Name Only Democrats such as Kerry and Kennedy. How will they denounce the Pope?

The Pope has said and done many great things, but the comment on gays is not one of them. Gay marriage is evil?

What he wrote is that it is part of an "ideology of evil", which is humanist collectivism. And, yes, it is evil.

In that it "attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man,...", it is evil.

Gay marriage is evil?

There's this little black book that explains it all, you should try reading it sometime.

Liberalism is evil.

Well, we didn't need the Pope to tell us that, but I'm sure glad he spoke up! God bless him.

Excellent! Reuters can't be happy about this.

Well the libs loved the Vatican when they appeared to be opposing "Bush's War". Now they will go back to the usual hatred.

I'm not Catholic (Methodist, actually). However, kudos to the Catholic Church for electing Karol Wotyla as Pope. While he didn't always see eye to eye with American policy, he recognizes evil when he sees it and isn't afraid to say so. Second to Ronald Reagan, I give him credit for the downfall of the evil of Soviet Communism. Considering the climate in which the Church selected Wotyla Pope, it was a gutsy move, but morally the absolutely right selection on the part of the College of Cardinals.

JP2 has done much to restore the status of the Papacy as a voice of God on earth. While I hope the time is not near, JP2 will be sorely missed when he passes. And I pray for guidance to the College that the Lord guide them in selecting his successor when the time comes.

Republicans would be wise to drive home the message that thousands of unborn African-Americans are being "exterminated" yearly at the hands of predominately White Abortionist like the new Democrat Party Chairman, Dr. Dean!

That message and the one sent when Republicans nominate the first African-American for President of the United States could finally free them the slave-like democrat plantation.

Whatever misgivings I may have about the Catholic Church, they do not apply to JPII. Its a shame he didn't have a better crop of clergy from which to choose better Bishops and Archbishops.

Since my wife and I converted to Catholicism 10 years ago, the Church has become much more conservative.
Good!

Straining to remember the last time the Vatican issued sage, practical advice on matters sexual: wasn't it, that condoms don't work?
(Or was it just yesterday: 'gay primates'? I must draw the line there, with admitting such great apes to the Big Tent. Bad business all around.)

While the Pope is a conservative on mattes of morals, it's important to realize he's a liberal on matters of faith. As a conservative moralist, he shares his views with many other religionists--including conservative Protestants and most Muslims and orthodox Jews. As a liberal on matters of the Catholic faith, however, he shares his views with the likes of Mahoney and Kasper and Weakland. The problem is that many Catholics see only one side of John Paul II and fail to recognize the harm he has done to the Catholic Church for twenty-five years. He will leave this world with his Church in far worse condition than when he first took over the papacy.

"Homosexual unions are totally lacking in the biological and anthropological elements of marriage and family which would be the basis, on the level of reason, for granting them legal recognition. Such unions are not able to contribute in a proper way to the procreation and survival of the human race. The possibility of using recently discovered methods of artificial reproduction, beyond involving a grave lack of respect for human dignity,(15) does nothing to alter this inadequacy."
CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING PROPOSALS TO GIVE LEGAL RECOGNITION TO UNIONS BETWEEN HOMOSEXUAL PERSONS
