It was my pleasure to go on the search for information and photos about Bratislava and Slovakia. Thank you for this thread, Alex.

However, now I want to visit there, as soon as possible. It looks like a beautiful country and I especially like the signs that Slovakians may have a marvelous sense of humor. It's just not clear that my budget is in agreement with my urge to go globe hopping right now.

Dovidinia, Alex.

When I searched for information about Bratislava, Slovakia, I found that most photos seemed to be shot in overcast conditions. My guess is that the person who took the photo of the boat on the Danube may have adjusted the filter to highlight the boat and background which left the river a murky color.

Many of the photos posted online of historical cathedrals and monuments in Bratislava make the city appear to have an overcast, cloudy appearance.

However, I like those particular views because it gives the city a mysterious, intriguing appearance sort of resembling film noir, or an old Orson Welles movie.

In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love; they had five hundred years of democracy and peace and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

-- Orson Welles (Harry Lime's speech in "The Third Man.")

If you give me $5,000, I'll invest it there as well. :-)

This is a fine country, and anyone visiting Europe should put it on their list.
Bratislava is only 45 minuets from Vienna, and the scenery is great, from the Danube to the high Tatra mountains.

Thanks, Alex. My husband and I have visited beautiful Vienna, Austria and many other countries in Europe. Bratislava, Slovakia will definitely go on my "must visit" list! :o)

Watching the President's speech on TV, it seemed that a huge portion of the crowd understood his remarks in English, not waiting for the translator, but responding spontaneously. Sometimes the roar sounded like he was addressing an Army or Marine base, they were so enthusiastic.

Is that how it sounded to you in the crowd? Were there many who understood in English?

Well, might be a good investment. Bratislava is another one of those places where IT is being outsourced to.

"Were there many who understood in English?"

Obviously, as I also noted the cheers were from what president Bush said, and not the translator.
Many of the crowd were young people, and they are the ones that are best in English.

Thanks, it was certainly thrilling to hear the cheers on TV. A response that has conveniently gone unnoticed by American commentators. They only want to cover protests of Europeans, not enthusiastic support for American ideas.
