The recovery from the recession of 2001 is often described as "jobless." But this is not entirely correct. My analysis of Census Bureau data shows that between March 2000 and 2004, the number of adults working in United States actually increased. What's interesting, however, is that all the net growth in jobs went to immigrant workers. In fact, while the number of unemployed adult native-born workers increased by 2.3 million over this time, the number of employed immigrants rose by 2.3 million. Significantly, about half the growth in immigrant employment was from illegal immigration. ...

And this is bad because illegal immigrants contributed to our economic growth?
This is bad because law abiding, tax paying Americans were underbid out of the job market. This is certainly good for people who profit from cheap labor. But not for American workers.
"Our" economic growth ?
No, kids don't want to work at McDonald's, they want to be I.T. guys and take jobs away from us geezers.
Job Americans won't do. Male Bovine Droppings!!!! Jobs Americans will not do as cheap as an illegal. Start chocking off the Illegals and see hte wages go up to a point tha Americans become interested. Stop artifically and illegally depressing wages with illegals.
And this is bad because illegal immigrants contributed to our economic growth?
What do they do for economic growth when American citizens would make the same contribution without costing taxpayers a dime?
Illegals cost us taxpayers an estimated $314 BILLION a year in subsidies..citizen subsidies, I might add.
And what kind of jobs are these? Construction jobs and resteraunt jobs mostly. Our housing costs are more expensive in my area because we don't have many immigrant workers.
The housing costs are probably more expensive because of overcrowding issues. The influx of people creates a surge in demand driving up costs. Also property taxes for the schools to pay the costs of English as a Second Language programs. Builders don't kick back low prices on homes for the illegal aliens they employ.
In some schools twice as much is spent on students who are immigrants. Spent from the taxes on Americans while the immigrants aren't paying the taxes. Then the doublewhammy is the liberals give the jobs to the illegal aliens over the Americans. Some of the Republicans do this too. Bush doesn't care about illegal immigration though, he said as much. A shame that Kerrick had to be dropped from consideration for Homeland Security as he would have been great for the position and Bush doesn't care about illegal immigration, so the whole thing is hypocritical.
No, kids don't want to work at McDonald's, they want to be I.T. guys and take jobs away from us geezers.
Unless kids have wealthy parents, they need those McDonald's jobs to make it thru college so they can work for I.T.
"The housing costs are probably more expensive because of overcrowding issues. "
THe only thing that drops when illegals move in are your property values and wages.
No apologies needed in being against it.
None offered.
it is bad because "ILLEGALS" <---(did you catch that word?) are taking jobs American CITIZENS <---(How about THAT one?) should be getting, at a LEGAL<----(And that one?) Wage and working conditions.
Using your glib and insipid argument, we should heap accolades on drug smugglers and pimps because they TOO are "helping the economy" by creating business. Come to think of it so did the 9/11 terrorists, in the long run. Look at all that money going into new jobs and new construction!
Califreakin'fornia is DROWNING in illegals. Our median home price is $475,000, requiring an income of $105K a year to qualify for. State median income is @ $52K. in addition, analysis shows a burden on native-born residents of $1,183 per household, per year and rising, to support this plague of locusts. Our jails, school gangs, hopital ER's and clinics, are overflowing with them and our state is losing it's butt* because of them. What is you next fallacious argument?
*An analysis of recent census data indicates that the presence of illegal aliens in California is costing the state's taxpayers more than $10.5 billion per year for education, medical care and incarceration. http://www.fairus.org/
Don't miss the current FR poll:
Which of the following is the best way to solve the illegal immigration problem?
Seal and militarize the borders
45.0%
Beef up and enforce existing law
39.3%
Some form of guest worker program
9.3%
Other
3.7%
Undecided/Pass
2.7%
Totally obvious, but I'm sure LuisGonzales and Dane will tell you different.
I think you're right. Mass immigration is being used to pump-up demand and keep growing the economy. That's why houses, even older ones are so damn expensive. A family of 12 Mexicans in one house produce as much buying power as a family of 4 native born americans with the average 2 income houshold.
I'm waiting for the "kneel before the altar of the free market" crowd to tell us that this is no problem.
If someone comes to the country illegally and will work for pennies on the dollar, fine. It's just capitalism, right?
Any illegal immigrants caught in the US should be jailed, with no bail, and immediately deported to their country of origin.
That said, I can attest to the fact that young native born Americans of today often refuse to take jobs they deem below their dignity.
I have worked alongside roofing, siding and construction outfits and the boss of those firms couldn't BUY a reliable American youth worker, I don't care if they paid $25/hour.
Sure some kids would accept the job initially, but would end up quitting within weeks after seeing how hard it is humping shingles up two stories, or upon realizing how hot it is in the summer, or cold in winter.
Maybe it's different in the Midwest and/or the South where there still is a decent work ethic.
But where I live in the Northeastern suburbs, reliable young Americans are hard to find.
