UNT Conservatives' Mock Illegal Alien Hunt Stirs Resentment
Agape Press ^ | February 10, 2005 | Jim Brown

Posted on 02/24/2005 3:51:58 PM PST by WindOracle

Scores of angry Latino students and others at the University of North Texas are demanding that something "be done" about a Young Conservatives' demonstration called "Capture an Illegal Immigrant Day."

The demonstration featured Young Conservatives members wearing bright orange shirts that read "Illegal Immigrant" on the front and "Catch me if U can" on the back. Passersby were encouraged to track down the mock "illegal aliens" around campus to win a prize.

Members of Latino fraternities and sororities were among those on the campus who were offended by the demonstration and confronted the conservative group members, accusing them of racism and hate speech. However, UNT Young Conservatives president Chris Brown says his group was simply protesting the violation of federal immigration laws.

"Our main goal was to educate our school and our community about immigration policies," Brown says, "but also to make people aware that it’s a growing issue, a problem, and to get it on the forefront of debate not only in our school and our state but in the country."

Latino students and groups from other area universities, along with representatives from the League of United Latin American Citizens, are calling on the University of North Texas to ban the Young Conservatives from the schools so-called "free speech zones." But according to Brown, his group is being attacked, incredibly, for holding a protest against lawbreaking.

"People said we shouldn't have our free-speech rights," the UNT Young Conservatives spokesman notes, "that we should have more restrictions on the free-speech areas, and that what we said was hate speech and racist." But all the campus group is guilty of, he insists, is "simply stating facts, stating figures about people breaking a federal law."

Michele Connole, publicity director for Young Conservatives of Texas, has also stated that the mock illegal alien hunt was intended to bring illegal immigration to the forefront of campus debate. According to a North Texas Daily news report, participants who caught the "immigrants" were rewarded with a candy bar and encouraged to ask the captive why the Young Republicans do not support President Bush's policies regarding illegal immigrant "guest workers."

Column is dated a bit, but just ran across it. Did a search and could find it nowhere here on FR, and thought it was interesting.

I will agree their method is a bit tasteless, but no more so than many other methods of exercising free-speech I have witnessed by the left.

That's not excuse; we think they are tacky, so there's no need to turn a blind eye because these are supposedly "our" people.

This is my alma mater. I graduated in '03. Some of these people were involved in the pro-life group where I was an public relations officer.

I'm not pleased at this. They often satire and perform stunts in poor taste. I hope this crap doesn't pour over and effect PR for Eagles for Life (www.eaglesforlife.org)

In conclusion I'd just like to say- GO MEAN GREEN!

'Tacky'? I would use the word 'effective'.

For all their statements about it being racist, it is interesting that the Latinos associate illegal aliens with Latinos.

I will agree that it is tacky, but find it amusing how quickly the leftists jump to the censorship advocacy position when it is something they disagree with. One thing positive about using tacky methods, which the left has known for a long time, it draws attention. I do not care for it, but it works, and is their Right as much as it is the liberals.

I agree with you. Although I would characterize the tactic as 'innovative'.

Race, creed, color, politics, it doesn't matter. If a person is in this country illegally, they should leave. There is nothing "offensive" or "racist" about that display. They are simply wearing "illegal immigrants" markers, indicating that they are here illegally. They didn't paint brown face and spoke in an exxaggerated Hisppanic accent talking about "stupid gringos".

Given a choice between a Mexican who came in legally and a Canadian who snuck across the border, it's no contest who I'll choose. Once again the left uses Third Reich tactic to get its way.

That IS a good point.. why is it the Latinos ASSUMED it was in reference to THEM particularly?

There is nothing racist about wanting a closed border policy. I would not give a damn if the illegals entering the country were black, white, red, yellow, or purple. It is our governments job to look after the interest of AMERICANS FIRST. Neither American, nor Mexican are races, they are NATIONALITIES.

This is a great illustration of how that that would destroy America try to define freedoms and rights of others. Pounting out the failures of the US government to defend our borders and capture and eject invaders is a demonstration of free speech. It is fact that the government doesn't do it's job. The illegal criminal Mexican aliens may not like the fact that they are criminal illegal Mexican aliens, they may want to continue to profit by their criminality and, they may be offended that others point out that they are, in fact, illegal criminal Mexican aliens, but there is nothing wrong with doing so. Just because you were able to break into my home doesn't mean you are one of the family!

heh. It is tacky - but I like it. They found a great way to draw attention to a serious problem. Unfortunately they got shut down, but hardy har har -- now this event is getting even MORE press than if it had never happened. Maybe everyone here should sponsor a mock illegal hunt in their neighborhood - or on their legislators lawn.

My observation too. I'm willing to bet they no more speak for the Latino community than Jesse Jagoff does for the blacks.

Besides, there are no black-americans, latino-americans, irish-americans, russian-americans, etc, etc, etc. Only Americans.

"That IS a good point.. why is it the Latinos ASSUMED it was in reference to THEM particularly?"

Because the groups in question are comprised of plantation liberals.

Yours is the only point worth discussing, since, in fact, the Latinos looked at what I presume were "white" Americans with nearly translucent skin, pretending to be illegals, and said "Lo, look, Hispanics"!

The bias and prejudice is in the eye of the beholder for sure.

Around here we have 80,000 plus Korean immigrants (and their children). There are another 50,000 Korean illegal alien immigrants estimated to be here as well.

Not to discuss Koreans, in general, but their presence proves the Latino protestors at that school are so woefully ignorant of what's going on they probably should not have been admitted to college.
