Thank you...who cares whether or not President Bush used in the past? I certainly don't. Why should it matter whether or not he is using NOW, provided that he does so responsibly & respects the rights of others?

I used to smoke cigarettes for 19 yrs...I quit a lil over 2 yrs ago, & if you wanna discuss withdrawal symptoms, THAT is an addiction I wish I had never gone thru. It took almost 5 months for me to begin to feel confident that I wasn't a nicotine addict anymore, & the process was a complete hell to deal w/. (due to the major stomach cramps, headaches, sleeping pattern disturbance, lack of appetite...). Makes me wonder why tobacco is legal.

This is your traditional joe conason hit piece. I recall his article in spy magazine that came out a week or so before the bush sr./clinton election that breathlessly detailed allegations, in a national enquirer tone and style, of bush cheating on his wife.

joe edits the NY Observer, which, is actually the most well written newspaper in nyc, with the exception of joe's column, which is wooden and lifeless. Sometimes Joe overcompensates for his wooden style and with a desperate need to create attention writes one of these hysterical hit pieces. If only Joe had some sense of literary style he wouldn't have to go to such extremes.

Why can't they get rehab while they are in jail so they won't do drugs again? Don't their parole officers check them for drugs when they get out?

Not all drug users NEED rehab.

"Psssssst.... Joe Conason is a pedophile. I have no evidence of that, but pass it around anyway."

this guy speaks like a criminal who was caught and makes comments about others doing more serious crime or the same crime as an excuse.

The difference is that Bush has said WHATEVER he did was a mistake, Mr. Toronto want to make the mistake a legally sanctioned activity. He could just get a prescription for ritalin, that is a cocain derivative.

I hope I remember correctly -- Jim Robinson is on this list.....but nobody's perfect

Joe Conason has never denied being a pedophile. I googled it, there's no denial on record.

In a taped segment played on "Good Morning America," Bush also addressed how he would deal with questions about cocaine use.

Is this is all that Conason is buiding his case on?

"We are not locking up mere users "to serve five or 10 or 20 years in prison". Those are the hardcore, scumbag drug dealers and traffickers who, IMO, belong there."

May be true today, however there are tens of thousands that are still serving time for arrests 10 or so years ago...

I think in arresting someone with the "intent" to distribute, the intent should be proven byond a reasonable doubt, not assumed.

In December 1999, after being bombarded with the coke use question, the Bush campaign issued a statement that W hadn't used coke for the last 25 years. In Jan 2000 in and interview on NBC, when asked to elaborate on the statement W said "I stand by the statement and will not discuss it again."

Now my simple-brained reading said that he used coke in 1974 or previously. We have our second coke using president in the white house. Something that diminishes the moral authority to keep people in federal prisons for drug use and possession.

I don't have a link to this. There used to be a couple of threads about it here.

Just compare Bush's nose to Clinton's beak. I rest my case.

Conason insists that, even though nothing can be proven, since "everyone knows" Bush did cocaine, it's hypocritical for Bush to support sentences for people convicted of cocaine possession.

Conason is a dufus, and hypocrisy (he is also compounding that with the class distinction) is overrated. You do not need to tell your young children (for example) every single bad thing you did.

So forget his hypocrisy argument, in my opinion. But some drugs should be legalized, and there are significant numbers of people (of all races and backgrounds, but especially minorities) who are in prison serving long sentences for mere possession; unjustly in my opinion, and use should be decriminalized.

This article calls for The Senility prayer

The Senility Prayer

God, grant me the senility
to forget the people
I never liked anyway,
The good fortune
to run into the ones I do,
and the eyesight
to tell the difference!
Amen

Frankly...I wouldn't fault them if I found out a male POTUS took mushrooms...30 years ago in their youth. Or slept with X # of women...Or fathered a child out of wedlock 30 years ago. People make mistakes in their youth.

BUT...I would want to know their character from the last 20 years. I would want to know how they were conducting their life now..and how they overcame their earlier circumstances.

In GWB's case...it's apparent that he's a "real" person...with "real" experiences that doesn't like to dwell on them...because he isn't that "person" any longer.

Many of us...did things that we aren't proud of...and would do differently if we could go back. I know I would........

FWIW-
