Rock, Well . . . Didn't
By Tom Shales
Monday, February 28, 2005; Page C01
Chris Rock jokingly welcomed viewers to "the 77th, and last, Academy Awards" last night but this Oscar show, nervously televised from Hollywood on ABC, will more likely turn out to be the first, and last, to be hosted by Rock. Though a brilliant and caustic stand-up comedian, Rock's stint as an Oscar host was strangely lame and mean-spirited.
Since we are apparently still living in the aftermath of Janet Jackson's overexposure at the 2004 Super Bowl, and because Rock is a comic known for raw and risque material, there was much hullabaloo in the weeks leading up to the ceremony about whether Rock would misbehave, perhaps earning ABC a scolding and sanction from the Federal Communications Commission, which now doles out fines the way Hollywood doles out awards.
But the only real controversy generated by Rock came during a so-so monologue in which he insulted several actors, Jude Law among them, as being small-timers who got parts only when better actors were unavailable. Rock had also pre-taped a peculiar bit of man-on-the-street comedy in which a collection of Hollywood moviegoers, most of them African American, said they hadn't seen or even heard of many of this year's nominated films. It was unclear if this routine was some sort of commentary on racism or a gratuitous slap at Hollywood, but either option is hardly encouraging.

I know we have an account and password, but I can't recall either one.
I'd like to read the rest of the article.
Chris Rock, (who I had NEVER heard of or seen before
last night) was a total disaster. His Bush bashing was
idiotic, yet typical, and of course, the smarmy audience
in attendance enjoyed it.
Does anyone really care about these Hollywood "events", or Hollywood in general anymore. Honestly, I don't know of a single person who gives a rat's ass about what goes on with these pampered elitists. The only people who seem at all interested about the goings on in Tinsletown are the actors themselves and the "journalists" who make their living investigating what brand of fabric softener a particular actor's maid uses. They are in their own little fantasy world.
Do you think we're excerpting because we WANT TO?????!!!!
It's because the WP demands it.
DUH. Don't lecture me on FR posting rules.
We also have an account and a password
that all of us use to gain entry.
It is those two "words" that I have forgotten.
Stop whining.
I am NOT whining.
Get real.
You were rude to me.
>>You were rude to me.
And you were rude back. You're even. Now get over it, and move on...
I did watch the news clips this morning. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the women were actually dressed.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Chris Rock will be crawling back under the rock he emerged from. This Clinton, Democrat, liberal low life it toast!!! Boring!!!!!!
I really don't care one bit for the trash that is put out by this scum of the earth, "Hollywood". To me, it has so entrenched itself in blackness, I cannot stand it. It has been tasken over like all the other industries. Music, TV, Sports, Golf and it is ridiculous. They have there own "black" oscars, there own channel and all the other channels. Don't get me wrong, I have great respect for many black conservatives and thinkers but the way the entertainment industry is going, I could care less about it.
Do you have a comment to make on the article?
Were the Oscars last night?! 'Series'ly, I didn't even know!
Glad I missed it.
And one other thing, if that idiot, Chris Rock, had been a white guy and made the comments that he made, he would have been toasted.
Gotta give credit to Hillary's Lovely Legs for a SUPERB link last night!!! It saved me from having to listen to the network blather, but I still got to "hear" the dish on the dresses, etc.!!!
If Chris Rock was a good comedain .. he could be funny without saying the F word a dozen times in one sentence
I'll bet Johnny never gave Lincoln Nebraska a "shout out" as he said goodnight from da' DCP (or Dorothy Chandler Pavilion) either.
The rest of the article is a slam at the winners and their speeches
This article is as bad has Chris Rocks performance
Not necessary ...
Yes, the deficit first. . .then 'his war'. . .ridicule the Commander-in-Chief. . .and imagine you are saving yourself by a gratuitous 'supporting the troops' (ie the poor fools under him); and delude yourself, audience included; that this is comedy. . .and really funny stuff.
That is as far. . .as long as I lasted. . .I turned them all off.
