The Lancet Fluke (Dicrocoelium lanceolatum) actually infects ants and then takes over it's brain. During mid day (peak cow grazing time) the ant is controlled by the parasite and travels up to the top of a blade of grass and locks it's jaws. The fluke is trying to use the ant to infect a grazing cow. When the sun starts to go down, the ant releases it's jaws and joins the rest of it's colony. During this time it may infect other ants. When the sun rises the next day, the cycle repeats itself.
Lancet Flukes! That explains a lot about the blue states!

Maybe that's where we get the word fluke, meaning lucky or chance occurrence.
