Oh the senselessness of it all. When will Congress ban all of these assault swords? They need to close the loophole at sword shows. Who really needs a sword anyway? Of course, the Congress should still allow swords for hunting...

This weekend I had the opportunity to hold three different authentic Samurai swords that were recently inherited by a lifelong friend of mine. One of them was over 400 years old, the other two were just over 300 years old.

Once you hold a real one in your hand you get a whole different sense of what a formidable weapon these things are.

My friend had me hold a piece of rice paper that was about 4 inches wide between my fingers. This made me more than a little nervous. He took one of the swords and easily cut the paper in two. The sharpness of the blade combined with its weight and heft make it easy to see how you could take off a head or a hand with a single stroke.

apparently slashed to death by a samurai sword

Guns and SUVs apparently aren't the only things to up and kill people on their own.

Seems I read a few months ago about a New York street gang whose "trademark" was to use swords to dispatch rival gang members.

What?  Was this written by a 5th grader?

If the victim were killed with a broadsword would the author have said "killed with a knight's sword"?

Is it so hard to say "killed with a katana (a sword used by the samurai)"?

George Pataki and Charles Schumer should be on top of this one with legislation to impose an immediate nationwide ban. Nine out of ten terrorist prefer samurai swords to slash the tires of airliners during takeoff.

(Sarcasm off)

A properly manufactured and maintained Samurai sword is essentially a 3-foot long razor blade. The crime scene must have been a mess.

after 39 posts, all I can say is DAMN.

An ex leo, who prolly had a firearm, is killed by a guy with a blade.

Just goes to show, that banning the weapon, or having the weapon, doesnt mean squat, as long as there are nutjobs that want to kill you, and have the patience to set up a plan...

This is a brutally savage way to go. I pray they catch the killer quickly, someone with the mindset to use this particular weapon is extremely dangerous. Understanding the potential of this weapon I'm a little shaken reading this, even without the major details.

Suffolk county police said Laura Nager's son, Zachary Gibian, 18, was arrested in connection with the death. He was charged with second degree murder and set to be arraigned on Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.

Yeah, someday I'll get to the end of the article without hitting "post".

They should threaten this fellow with the same weapon and let him stew on it a few days.

Not one post lamenting the murder of a retired cop at the hands (so it seems) of his own son. Plenty of jokes, but not one word of compassion.
