Today Show Terrorism Expert Blames New Zarqawi Threat on US Invasion of Iraq

Leave it to The Today Show to blame the latest threat by Osama Bin Laden to attack the United States - on George Bush.

The gist of the interview between Matt Lauer and former Clinton admin terrorism expert Roger Cressey was this: OBL's ability to carry out acts of terrorism may be "attrited" [fancy word for 'reduced']. But, thanks to the recruitment and techniques he has developed in Iraq due to the war, Zarqawi's ability to conduct terrorist operations has been enhanced.

As a result, OBL may be "outsourcing" his terrorist operations to Zarqawi.

So, bottom line, as per the Today Show theory . . . it's all George Bush's fault. Did Today find some musty old talking points from Howard Dean's failed primary campaign? Sure sounds like it. You remember the line: if only we had concentrated on OBL he would have been killed or captured by now. Instead, we've created "a breeding ground for terrorism in Iraq."

Lauer 'helpfully' chimed in with this gem of a 'question': "Is it fair to say that [OBL and Zarqawi] had differences in the past but that war in Iraq has drawn them together?" Of course Cressey was only too happy to agree.

You're probably wondering how, to balance their coverage, Today dealt with the hopeful news of possible moves toward democracy in Lebanon and Egypt, stemming from developments in Iraq.

Hah! Just kidding. You know darn well that Today didn't "have time" for that. The world needed to know instead about opening statements in the Michael Jackson trial.

This morning was a perfect example of MSM news strategy. If something bad happens, whenever possible it's all W's fault. If something good happens, try not to report it at all.

This one seems likely to backfire. What are they going to say when Zarquai is captured? And I suspect he will be soon.

Good morning, glgb!

I have two words for the MSM: the internet.

...former Clinton admin terrorism expert Roger Cressey...

Is this the 'terrorism expert' who was in charge of ignoring the first WTC bombing? Or was he the one in charge of ignoring the Cole bombing?

Eight years of growing terrorism, all conveniently ignored. What a legacy, bill!!

I swear if I ever see Lauer, Couric, Williams in New York, they are gonna get a Bronx cheer from me, those FPOSs.

I'm glad I threw my tv out, who needs that crap...

As a lady, I couldn't post the "F" word here, so settled for the Facts instead.

Not at all disputing your broader point, but Lauer's question is actually a good one and I know a lot of guys in the military and intel community asked it to help flesh out linkages and commonalities(although I agree he probably meant it as an I gotcha type of question).

The term "attrited," while seemingly fancy, is a very specifically defined term by the US military.

Blowing up planes and buildings might be one thing. But outsourcing? That is "a kitchen table issue." It is intolerable.

Why, we don't know if OBL is respecting international labor and environmental standards with his outsourcing contracts. He is taking good terrorist jobs away from loyal workers within Al-Qaeda. OBL's problems should not be solved "on the backs of hard-working terrorists who get up every morning, go to work, and play by the rules!"

Roger Cressey is the guy the Toons trotted out to try to trash Richard Miniter's book, Losing bin Laden. See this FR thread for an example. Cressey failed miserably.

Terrorism didn't matter to the MSM then because that was on a Democrats watch. Now, it must be eradicated in the blink of an eye without any use of force.

So, as you see it, this outsourcing factor could lead to many loyal Democrats turning on bin Laden?
