Russia cautiously supports Syrian pullout from Lebanon

Pressure on Syria to withdraw from Lebanon increased on Thursday morning as Russia lent cautious support to the move.

"Syria should withdraw from Lebanon, but we all have to make sure that this withdrawal does not violate the very fragile balance which we still have in Lebanon, which is a very difficult country ethnically," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the BBC.

In an interview published earlier this week, Syrian
President Bashar al-Assad said he may pull the troops out in a few months.

I hope so, but I hope we're not just going to see another bloodbath between the various factions within a year or two. The last war was evil enough as is hardly unusual with civil wars. None of the contenders retained their honour.

No problem. Syrian troops will be replaced by the Americans and Israelis. Lebanon will return to its normal state when Americans were in Beirut and Israel occupied the south. Good plan!

People seem to forget that while "Lebanese" people have been around for thousands of years - "Lebanon" is an artifical nation. About 100 years ago when Christian Arabs from Lebanon came to North and South Americas to escape the Turks, they were classified and self identified as "Syrians".
