China shuts down 47,000 'harmful' internet cafes

China has closed 47,000 internet cafes in a campaign aimed at creating a more "wholesome environment" for children.

The country’s leaders encourage internet use for business and education, but have expressed growing concern that it gives children access to violent or sexually explicit material, and have tried to block online criticism of their Communist rule.

The cafes closed in the crackdown had been "admitting minors and engaged in dissemination of harmful cultural information", the Communist Party newspaper People’s Daily said on its website.

About 21,000 of the closed cafes might be allowed to reopen after making unspecified changes. It said the business licences of 2131 were revoked.

China has the world’s second-largest number of internet users after the United States, with 87 million people online.

The government said in October that it had detained 445 people for operating websites deemed pornographic, and fined internet cafe operators a total of 100 million yuan (£6.2 million) for letting children play violent games.

Can someone please answer the following question for me (an unreconstructed right-wing knuckle dragger whose grandfather perished fighting communists sixty years this year): why do millions of American go into Walmart each day & purchase Chinese goods?

By so doing, they empower the communists, and destroy American manufacturing. That is just PLAIN WRONG!

We must all be willing to pay any price, bear any burden to ensure the success of America!

If I said it once, I said it a million times. Do Not Support the Chinese Communists!

Let me be perfectly frank: I am mad as hell and I am not taking it anymore!

During 9/11 we were not set up to cover this.

On 9/11 FR was one of the few sites that didn't crash. There are threads archived if you do a search.

Exactly right. They do have a rate lower than the market, however, they are not currently a member of the IMF, and do not have a market exchange rate. That is one of the reasons that Wal-Mart buys so many Chinese goods, as they are regulated at prices that are lower than would otherwise be the case.

Because their only concern is price. Was that a trick question or what?

Preventing kids from being subjected to filth and nudity is NOT the same as dictators trying to stifle legitimate political dissent....I don't understand how keeping kids from porn becomes an issue of "their civil liberties"....The dictators in Bejing are trying to stifle freedom of speech...They don't give a rat's patootey for protecting kids from porn...

At least they have half-good intentions with regard to censorship.

Put down the bottle and step away before you hurt yourself.

That's not 47000 websites. It's internet cafes. Those are shops where one purchases internet time to do stuff on-line.

"China shuts down 47,000 'harmful' internet cafes"

"This is the kind of thing Hillary will want to do."

...Right after she leads the effort by her fellow leftists to abolish the electoral college and ensure that only huge population centers (read "heavily corrupt/democrat" areas) have any say in who becomes president in this country.

"It really isn't capitalism with slave labor. As soon as Chinese labor wises up to how bad they are getting screwed which would come quicker with a free internet. They are going to demand more wages, more freedom and control over their destiny."

Exactly. It is very disapponting that the business and political leaders in this country, who know or should know this, are exploiting Chinese slave labor. Assuming all factors being equal, would they support such a regime in Africa? My sense is that they would not.
