John François Kerry: Bucking History
National Journal ^ | March 4, 2005 | John Maggs

Posted on 03/05/2005 2:41:28 PM PST by quidnunc

The last time that most Americans saw John Kerry, he certainly looked as if he would rather be somewhere else. It was Inauguration Day, and the man who had come within 119,000 Ohio votes of becoming president had gamely taken a prominent spot at the front of the section designated for members of Congress, instead of melting into the mass of Democrats. That gave television cameras a perfect shot of Kerry's face for the pool feed that ran on most broadcasts and showed up on the jumbo screens set up for the crowd.

If there was an element of good sportsmanship in Kerry's presence that day, it wasn't returned by the thousands of Bush supporters who booed long and loud when they saw Kerry's image. Some television anchors informed viewers of the jeering, but many viewers heard no explanation for the look of disgust that crossed Kerry's face as the boos reached him.

One of the greatest highs in American life is to win the presidency. One of the greatest lows is to be the runner-up. In many other democracies, the runner-up remains the leader of the opposition and is often one of the most powerful people in government. In this country, the runner-up instantly becomes a reject, an anachronism, the ghost of politics past. In his February 3 monologue, Tonight Show host Jay Leno joked, "I guess you know last night President Bush gave his State of the Union speech. And in a related story, John Kerry rented Shrek 2."

Only a fat Teddy Kennedy suckup would show up for the Inauguration. This guy had better sign his form 180 or Tim Russert is going to be very angry.

>> Kerry has chosen instead to signal the nation and his party that -- like it or not -- he has no intention of disappearing from politics. <<

Disappearing? Who would notice? He holdsthe worst attendance record in the Senate. The good citizens of Massachussetts should fire him for laziness.

Correction, Kerry IS 'Shrek', minus the green guy's winning personality.

If Kerry thinks that his liddle woooman TerRAYzah is going to go for the idea of him running again for President in '08, when she is pushing 70 years old, he's in for an unpleasant surprise. Mama T will cut him off without a damn cent.

Believe that.

Every time someone mentions "Jean Francois", I think of this song British soliders used to taunt the French with in the 19th century:

Boney was a warrior
Away, a-yah!
A warrior and a terrier
Jean Francois!

Boney fought the Russians
Away, a-yah!
The Russians and the Prussians.
Jean Francois!

Moscow was a-blazing
Away, a-yah!
And Boney was a-raging.
Jean Francois!

Boney went to Elba
Away, a-yah!
Boney he came back again.
Jean Francois!

Boney went to Waterloo
Away, a-yah!
There he got his overthrow.
Jean Francois!

Then they took him off again
Away, a-yah!
Aboard the Billy Ruffian.
Jean Francois!

He went to Saint Helena,
Away, a-yah!
There he was a prisoner,
Jean Francois!

Boney broke his heart and died
Away, a-yah!
Away in Saint Helena
Jean Francois!

Regards, Ivan

That's great, never heard it before. Suits our own John Francois to a "T".

Rent the movie "Waterloo" starring Christopher Plummer - the soliders in that film sing a variant of it to basically tell the French "sod off".

One of the greatest highs in American life is to win the presidency. One of the greatest lows is to be the runner-up.

The lowest low is being Algore.

"Rent the movie "Waterloo"..."

I actually saw that in the movies when it first came out as I had a wild crush on Philippe Forquet. Now you are giving me a good excuse to watch it again. Merci!

good over-view article, but how come there's no mention of His Foolishness's blunders on Imus and MTP when he was careless enough to be cornered into discussing his Form 180?

If he wanted a polite reception, maybe he shouldn't have spent his campaign denigrating everyone who didn't march in lockstep with his campaign.
