A Democratic Call to Arms (Reach Out to Military)
Washington Post ^ | March 6, 2005 | Peter Beinart

Posted on 03/05/2005 9:41:40 PM PST by FairOpinion

Last month, just hours before the Democratic National Committee chose the former Vermont governor to lead it, it did something else: It created an Office of Military and Veterans Outreach. In the coming weeks, Dean will decide what kind of funding and staff this new office receives.

But despite widespread talk about military disaffection over Iraq, John Kerry won only 41 percent of Americans with military experience. While active-duty, National Guard and Reserve voters are hard to poll scientifically, a survey last October by the Military Times gave Kerry a mere 18 percent.

Democrats have been alienated from the military since Vietnam, almost as long as Republicans have been alienated from African Americans. They need a generational strategy to repair the rift.

But the biggest problem is cultural. Democrats should acknowledge that at times the left's understandable anger over Vietnam degenerated into a lack of respect for the military. And they should make amends in very practical ways -- most significantly, as the Progressive Policy Institute's Will Marshall has pointed out, by shaming America's colleges and law schools into letting the military recruit on campus. Liberal students, faculty and administrators have the right to criticize the Pentagon's discriminatory policies toward gays and lesbians. But it is outrageous for them to treat the U.S. military -- especially in a time of war -- as a pariah. And Howard Dean should go to the college towns where his most stalwart supporters reside and tell them so.

As usual, the Dems are working on how to create the impression that they care about the military, to fool the American people, not to work on really recognizing and respecting the military.

When the liberals are going to realize that they cannot fool the American people. They did not learn anything from their crushing defeat last November. They simply cannot fool the majority of voters period. The majority of voters are smart enough to know what is fake and what is real.

Remember John Kerry and how miserably he failed when he attempted to fool the American people in being someone that he is not.

First step: Count the absentee votes in Fla. for 2000 election. For sure they'd rather be viewed as sh*theads than do this.

> ... created an Office of Military and Veterans Outreach.

More not getting it.

They hardly need to "reach out" to the disgruntled grunts.

And everyone else already knows what they're selling,
and most of 'em want no part of it.

Sounds like it's really a campaign to get the "base"
to better disguise themselves by toning down the rhetoric.

Anyway, a swell waste of resources for our pals in the
disloyal opposition.

The Dems think that their message is "not getting out", when in fact it IS getting out loud and clear, that's why they keep losing, because people are finally starting to figure out that the Dems only stand as a cheering section for America's enemies.

When I was in, the only people that voted dem were black. Everyone else despised klinton. Despised is too kind a word, but this is a civil forum.

"It created an Office of Military and Veterans Outreach."

Only the Dems would have to create and then try to decide how to fund an "office" to do something that the rest of us do without even thinking: show respect, support, and appreciation for our military in thanks for defending our freedom. This shouldn't require an "office"; it lives in the human heart.

This will go nowhere. The Dems need to first prove that they have a pair.

Will this "office" be down the hall from the "office of outreach to rednecks with Confederate flags on their pick-up trucks"? LOL

The irony here is that "Cowie the skiier" is a draft dodger and ran on a platform of undermining the war.

The we have Jean Querry's color military past and horrid legislative career on Defense Matters. Hell in the 90's he drafted legislation to force retirement of 80,000 senior NCO's and freeze military pay for five years!

ALGore actively supressed the military vote!

Then we have the last Democratic President with the smallest Defense Budgets in recent history, with of course the requisite draft dodging background.

Worst of all the Dems don't stand for a strong America....You crack me up Cowie!
