Publix's new flavor
Orlando Sentinel ^ | March 4, 2005 | Sarah Hale Meitner

Publix Super Markets is branching out with a Hispanic flair.

The Lakeland-based grocer confirmed Thursday it plans to convert two of its 850 stores into Hispanic-format supermarkets, with bilingual employees, Spanish music on the loudspeaker, and hard-to-find imports.

Publix Sabor, which means Publix Flavor, will open in early May in Kissimmee and Hialeah. The two Florida stores will feature expanded selections of Hispanic foods, including new offerings from Publix's private-label food line, such as a mojo marinade and frozen plantains.

This is a better article from the Orlando Sentinel about Publix Super Market's goal of creating supermarkets aimed at Hispanic customers than the original one posted on FR recently. Maybe these markets will offer tasty Cuban-style sandwiches?

I can't knock anything that results in more choices of tortillas, chiles, and refried beans.

So...what's so new about this?

Down here in South Texas all of the HEB and Wal-Mart stores are like that. As a matter of fact, they have hired bi-lingual employees so that they can serve the customers who speak English. However, they still have not overcome the problem of products with Spanish labels on them yet. I think they are planning to hold "immersion" classes for English reading customers.

Smart move on Publix part. I like going to small Hispanic markets for their meat, vegetables, home made salsa, and bakery items. Aaack, now I'm craving Carne Asada.

It is an absolutely amazing story how Hispanics have overtaken and bypassed American Blacks as the movers and shakers of the minority American groups. They have wisely diversified their political power, are rapidly assimilating into general American society, and have not pursued a woe is me socialist dogma that American Blacks have. As a result, American Blacks remain at the bottom of the economic/opportunity totem pole, currently have no political power whatsoever (The Congressional Black Caucus & NAACP have no impact on the current GW Bush administration), and have not effectively, after hundreds of years, and Civil Rights legislation, assimilated into general American society. Yet, they continue to be blindly faithful to a Democrat Party that has failed them miserably. Go figure! Maybe they will wake up someday, and see how they have been had by their Democrat slave masters!!!

I'm craving the New Mexico/ Southern Colorado style of Hispanic cuisine...impossible to get here in central Wisconsin. Stuffed Sopapillas smothered w/ Green Chile Sauce are to die for.

Here in central Mo.We have at least 3 Mexican restaurants that were started by people straight out of Mexico (legally). One of them is "really" Mexican it's called LaMexiceta(sp). The food is a Little Too Mexican for me,wife likes it.The others are great!

If you ever are in the area PM me and I'll take you to one of them.

Ah, sopapillas. I've seen them in the stores for years, but I don't know what to do with them. They look like english muffins. Do you heat them on a griddle, then stuff them with meat?

I guess that's one good thing about living in Ca. They have darn near everything in a market in your area. I'm itching to try Indian cuisine one of these days.

Insightful post.

The plantation mentality has been ruthlessly used by the Democrats for decades now.

If you've been to East Los Angeles and Santa Fe Springs (ah heck, much of Orange County nowadays!) in the Los Angeles area, you're seeing Hispanic neighborhoods gentrifying so fast that the "slums" of those cities are disappearing in no time flat. Compare that with the still-poor conditions of South Central Los Angeles with its heavily-African American communities, to say the least.

One would think the stores would refelct the demographic diversity of the given area and surroundings.

Our local Publix readily stocked "Pao De Queijo" which is my absolute favorite Brasilian treat. I'm the only gringo I know who bakes it at home. I have a variation of the recipe supplied by the mix that makes it far better.

It's so funny on the Sunday mornings when I make to hear the kids bugging me every 5 minutes until it's ready.

"Brasilian Pao De Queijo....Ughnnnnnnn...."

For the life of me, I just don't understand this. I wish I had the facts at hand, but there were statistics that pointed out the marriage and business ownership rate for Blacks after slavery was abolished. Compared to today's stats, it is shocking. Things started going down hill after "the great society experiments", apparently.

It's a damn shame that intelligent people are still being suckered into staying on the plantation. It is slowly changing thanks to men like Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, but it's not changing fast enough, imo.

I grew up in Hialeah during the early influx of Cubans and it's amazing how they have transformed South Florida. They had a lot of positive effects in the area and are now the leaders of South Florida. I think they are a great example of American opportunity and self-determination. And I love Cuban sandwiches! Seems the black community could learn a lot from them, if they were interested.

Most supermarkets already have this kind of stuff - I suspect Publix was behind the times.

You definitely aren't the only gringo. We all do it. Dirty secret: Latin America isn't just for Latinos anymore. ;)

They are not rapidly assimilating into American Culture... they are bringing their culture and refusing to assimilate... Close the borders... Viva America

So true, and if I continue at this pace, I'll be compelled to sue the whole of Latin America as well as Italy for one of those "fatty" lawsuits - lol!

Have you been to a Churrascaria in your area yet?

Now there's a meal that doesn't end. They must have some good ones in your town. We have Porcao, Gaucho Rodizio and Chima in our area. We are regulars at all of them.
