Bono May Make Short List for World Bank

WASHINGTON - Treasury Secretary John Snow on Sunday would not rule out the idea of Irish singer Bono, an activist on debt relief and AIDS, making the short list of potential candidates to lead the World Bank even though an American is expected to get the job.

"He's somebody I admire. He does a lot of good in this world of economic development," Snow said.

"Most people know him as a rock star. He's in a way a rock star of the development world, too. He understands the give-and-take of development. He's a very pragmatic, effective and idealistic person," Snow said.

Snow is part of the Bush administration team working on finding a successor to James Wolfensohn, who is stepping down as head of the development bank on June 1.

Asked whether the Irish singer would make the short list of candidates that Snow is preparing for President Bush, the secretary said: "I am not going to review here all the candidates that are on the list. But I will attest to my admiration for Bono."

Bono toured Africa with Snow's predecessor, Paul O'Neill, who focused a lot of attention during his time at the Treasury on poverty and diseases such as AIDS in Africa.

Bono has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for international social justice efforts that include trying to persuade rich nations to relieve the debt of poor nations.

Another candidate who has surfaced is Carly Fiorina, the recently ousted chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Co.

"She's also a friend and somebody I think well of," Snow told ABC's "This Week." But, he added, "I think we're going to have to wait to reveal that next president of the World Bank for a little while."

The administration began the search for Wolfensohn's successor in early January and said it would talk to other countries that belong to the 184-nation World Bank. The administration wants to name a replacement before Wolfensohn's term ends.

The United States is the World Bank's largest member nation. The bank traditionally has had an American president.

"I fully expect that to be the case, yes, and so do the G-7 (Group of Seven) finance ministers and all of the participants in the process," Snow said. "I've had any number of calls from finance ministers from around the world saying they want it to be an American."

The bank's sister institution, the International Monetary Fund, traditionally has been headed by a European.

Other names floated for the World Bank job include: John Taylor, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for international affairs; Peter McPherson, the former head of Michigan State University who served as Bush's point man on rebuilding Iraq's financial system; Randall Tobias, Bush's global AIDS coordinator; and Christine Todd Whitman, the former head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Here are my questions regarding Mr. Bono:

1. What is his highest level of education completed?

2. Will he be willing to bathe regularly if he is given this job?

Carly Fiorina, who destroyed Lucent and HP. Bono, aging hippy-dippy rock star.

I get the feeling that the Bush administration doesn't like the World Bank very much...

Is John Snow a complete moron?
Bono is a Socialist and also someone who has no idea how the Financial Markets work and is completely unqualified to head the World Bank. Although as far as I am concerned the World Bank and the IMF do a lot more harm than good.
If it was up to Bono he would forgive every 3rd world countries debt and who knows what else.
Snow needs to go and has been a horrible Treasury Secretary.
Can't we replace him with Larry Kudlow?

"Has the world gone insane? A musician to head up the World Bank. Now I've seen everything."

And a fired CEO who left with millions in 'Get Lost' payments as another candidate. Clinton touted as UN Sec General and his wife touted as US President. The Elites have gotten to the point where they don't even have to hide their schemes, they have no fear.To answer your question - Yes, the World has gone insane.

Bono has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for international social justice efforts that include trying to persuade rich nations to relieve the debt of poor nations.

How is this related to peace? Instead of constantly putting the pressure on the United States to throw money to warlords, tyrants and corrupt a-holes, why doesn`t he put pressure on the warlords, tyrants and the a-holes to get their sh-t together? Oh but that`s too dangerous. Let`s see him go to Kim Jong Il and tell the "Emperor" to get his mini butt off his high horse and stop starving his people, or tell Castro to free his people and stop killing the ones who try to escape. Oh but that`s right, you can`t put any pressure on animals the left worships. "How dare Bush say Mr. Jong Il is in the axis of evil!"

If Bono wants to do any good as an entertainer, he should tell the left that infects his buisiness to stop supporting these animals. I mean how many people from Hollywood and the music biz have gone to Cuba now to worship Castro?? You could practically name just about anyone who is anyone in Hollywood. Speilberg, Nicholson, Kevin Costner, Robert Redford, Spike Lee, Sidney Pollack, Oliver Stone, Woody Harrelson, Danny Glover, Ed Asner, Shirley MacLaine, Alanis Morissette, Leonardo DiCaprio, even the freggin` dingbat models go over there to worship that animal, Kate Moss and that other cocaine junkie Naomi Cambell who declared "Castro was a source of inspiration to the world". Naomi Cambell who is a good friend of BONO!!!

He does a lot of good in this world of economic development," Snow said

Ah, how? By screaming at America to more & more & more? I don't recall hearing about Boner giving up HIS money. Or, am I wrong?

And Jesse Helms is also a good friend of Bono. Therefore, Jesse Helms believes that Castro is "a source of inspiration to the world"?

What the heck, I'll come out in favor of it. For one, seriously nominating Bono (or Carla) pretty much confirms to me that the position is useless. Second, either he will surprise me and do something good, or really mess up the world bank, and we can cut our participation in it.

I`m just saying if he wants to do some good, he should tell his buddies to stop supporting these animals and promote that instead of constantly asking for cash to make these animals rich, because that`s all he`s doing. He`s not relieving ANY debt. He`s taking money from the United States and putting it straight into the pockets of these a-holes. Supporting terrorism, Communism, tyranny, warlords, that`s all you ever hear and get from Hollywood and the music biz, they are promoted relentlessly, yet the ones who hate Castro, the ones who know the horror of Communism are never given any platform whatsoever, they are completely shut out from the media. Gloria Estefan for example...

"Singer Gloria Estefan is another Cuban refugee who feels frustrated that people don't understand the Castro government. Estefan fled the communist nation when she was two years old.

"People don't have a lot of information, and when they ask me about it, I tell them about the drama of exiles, the repression, the firing squads, the horror of communism," she told Exito Online in 1997.

"My whole family paid a heavy price for freedom. My father not only fought in the Bay of Pigs, he volunteered to fight in Vietnam. He fought for these same freedoms," Estefan said.

"How could I forget that Fidel Castro was the person who did me so much harm?" she asked."

Why not David Lee Roth? Or Sting? Or hell, I hear Barbara Streisand is a cheapskate, doesn't she qualify?

I mean, as long as we're considering brain-dead rock stars, let's keep an open mind to the wide field of candidates.

Personally I'd suggest Kurt Cobain. He's already dead and would likely do the least amount of damage.
