God bless this Marine. I hope he is declared innocent--and quickly.

How come Pantaro gets targeted for harassment and not Coburn?

A pre-trial, or Article 32, hearing next month will determine whether 2nd Lt. Ilario G. Pantano will face a court-martial that could lead to the death penalty.

And a healthy protest by FReepers to Don Rumsfeld will bring this dog and pony show to an abrupt end with the Marine released and the charges dropped.

This is nothing but a bunch of Barbra Streisand that was brought about by a clymer who didn't like the officer.

Let the accuser PROVE his allegations or suffer a worse fate that Lt. Pantano.

In the meantime, start sending protests to Don Rumsfeld. Make him feel some heat over this and it will come to a swift end.

Putting my money where my mouth is, here is my letter to Don Rumsfeld:

Hon. Don Rumsfeld,
Secretary of Defense
The Pentagon
Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Rumsfeld,

The charges of murder that have been preferred against Marine Lt. Pantano are ludicrous. This fine Marine did nothing but follow SOP and carry out his primary duty - to protect himself and his troops. The two Muslim murderers he killed advanced on him in a menacing fashion, ignoring his orders, delivered in Arabic, to stop. He felt threatened and killed them before they could kill him. That charges of murder have been preferred by a disgruntled Marine in his unit who had been disciplined twice by Lt. Pantano, is outrageous.

Mr. Secretary, if you want to affect morale and regain the trust of the military, you need to stop this idiocy in its tracks - NOW!!! Lt. Pantano is in a war zone and carried out his orders with honor and fairness. If you want to see recruiting efforts plumment and the military turned into caricature of itself, ignore this issue and hope that it will go away. After eight long years of Clinton, the military hoped they had been rescued from obscurity by the election of President Bush and your appointment as Secretary of Defense. Don't undo all the good that the two of you have done by allowing this dog and pony show to continue. You have the power and the authority to end this nonsense now and I strongly urge you to exercise it.

If you don't, you will be aiding those who hate the military and you will be betraying the trust that those in uniform serving our country today have placed in you. The Abu Ghraib circus trials were bad enough; don't aggravate a bad situation and make it worse by allowing the trial of Lt. Pantano to proceed.

I think we need to write to the military person in charge of this case.

It is doubtful Rumsfeld would be permitted to intervene.

Can anyone help with this?

Lets see, we:

1) Take away their family medical benes

2) Put our Marines on trial for doing their job.

Then we wonder why recruiting falls like a stone! Yep folks thats it. Lets put the entire chain of command on trial for Dresden next!

Rumsfeld, at his heart, is a politician. Even though he is a lame-duck politician, he doesn't want to go out with a legacy of betraying the troops. And, allowing the Abu Ghraib trials AND this nonsense against Lt. Pantano is a betrayal of the troops.

I am presently in an email discussion with some (likely) PR weenie (presumably) at the Pentagon who is trying to blow smoke up my skirts with a "don't worry, be happy" approach.

I'm not buying it and have just let this individual know it. The more aware they are that the public is unhappy over the potential court-martial of Lt. Pantano, the sooner the charges will be rescinded due to "lack of evidence".

We need to flood their server on this one - overload'em and let them hear from us. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

So, fellow FReepers, start squeaking!!!

Title 10 of the United States Code disagrees with you.

That's nice.

The military justice system doesn't observe the US Code.

They have the UCMJ which is what Lt. Pantano is charged with violating.

I'll forgive your ignorance, but Title 10 of the United States Code is the authority for the UCMJ.

The US is not a banana republic.

Speaking of Rich, does the President have the power to pardon 'crimes' committed by military? I would assume so.

There was no crime committed by this Marine.

No pardon is needed.
