UAW Bans Pro Bush Marines From Parking Lot
WXYZ ^ | March 9, 2005 | Jenny Clark

Posted on 03/11/2005 5:24:59 AM PST by conservativecorner

Some U.S. Marines say they were surprised by the decision made by Detroit auto workers about parking. It all started with the cars some Marines drove, and what was on them.

The words that have some U.S. Marines in shock came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit. For a number of years now, dozens of Marine reservists have been thankful to park in the UAW’s lot for weekend training with no problem at all - until now.

Marines at nearby Marine Corps Reserve Center say on Tuesday morning, the director of security at the UAW told them that while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there.

U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Joe Rutledge told Action News, "We received a phone call from the UAW, who support us by letting us park down at their facility. They called and said they weren’t going to allow or they would turn away some vehicles."

A spokesman for the UAW released a statement to Action News which reads:

"While reservists certainly have the right to drive non-union made vehicles and display bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s, that doesn’t mean they have the right to park in a lot owned by members of the UAW."

As U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Lee Cooper explained, "We’re very appreciative, but on the other hand, it’s kind of discriminating between, let’s say a lance corporal going through college can only afford a 15-year-old vehicle and it happens to be a Nissan."

"while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there."

It's another "we support the troops, BUT...."

The qualifier in front of the "but" means nothing. If they did support them, they'd let them continue to park there.

Good point. Think I'll start asking around to see if the truely support their union brothers or are they just in it for themselves.

The UAW won't be happy until all auto workers are out of jobs or at least out of class.

Nice job UAW. You just alienated more car buyers.

If the bumper stickers tick them off so much, push the Union to spend a little of its outlandish overhead on new car buying programs for the Marines on the condition they do not put bumper stickers on them. Now THAT would get them GOOD press, but instead they take an approach that loses even more customers for their employers. Just goes to show you that the Union honchos have been promoted WAY above their abilities.

Spoken by a Leader of one of the most anti-worker organizations on the Planet. IMO W and the Reps haven't done as much re: Trade and Illegals as many would like but his omissions pale in comparison to the actions of these unions in assisting in the flight of businesses offshore.

It's this kind of blatant, in-your-face, undeniable and indisputable leftist Democrat political bias exhibited by the UAW and other unions that makes me wonder how any poster on this forum can continue to say bulls**t like "...but the rank and file are all Republicans" with a straight face. This crap continues because the membership allows it to continue. Any union member, by simply being a union member, is guilty of this kind of chicanery. And I mean every single one...

Some things really trip my trigger, and this is one of them. Deny basic rights to the guys who provide for your own: "We support you, just not your right to free speech, association, or "choice"." Now I think I get it - they're freakin' nuts!

I have stated before - Unions in this country have far outlived their legitimate useful life.

There was a time when working conditions were actually extremely unsafe and pay was bad in many factories - thats when Unions did something right.

But now our Federal Government (OSHA) makes regulations for workplaces that provides for a reasonable safe working environment. Minimum wages and competition have provided for fair wages. The only purpose of unions now is as an organized crime family - racketeering and election stealing.

No more federal subsidies!!!

What make of vehicle does this Union make so I know to avoid it?

What a bunch of garbage. Let's be honest. It really didn't have anything to do with the makes of the cars, it had everything to do with the fact these Marines support Bush. They thought using that little qualifier would help them to not look quite so petty and childish. Everyone knows a lot of foreign cars are actually made here in the states.

The unions are dying, a little more everyday. When you don't live in the real world, that happens. The saddest part is, they know they're pulling the wool over their own eyes. They know they spew BS that few really believe. They watch their high senority guys sleeping on the job every damn day, while they whine about no or low overtime or profit sharing.

And you ought to see all the Kerry/Edwards stickers and signs still up in the plants. Like it's still possible. It's just plain sad.

Maybe they should remove all their foreign-made clothing as they enter the plant.

I can't wait for the majority of our servicemen to return and face these leftist jerks.

Oh, speaking of unions, don't forget about the We Are Family video (with Spongebob Squarepants) showing in elementary schools near you. Today, I think.

I grew up in Windsor, Ontario, across from Detroit. For the last 30 years, all the union parking lots had signs that warned of towing away foreign cars if parked in their lots and cited a local bylaw code supporting this. If you drove by a factory in a Japanese car during a strike (and there are some major roads where you can't avoid it) you could get a brick in your windshield for putting your local worker's job in danger. Union deals with the courts usually gives amnesty to anyone being violent during a strike. Auto worker unions s*ck.

I used to work/ live in MI before the jap cars became popular. There were sometimes more foreign cars than American made cars in the GM and Ford lots. The reason I noticed was because I rode a Harley (mostly Amercian made) and would always laugh to myself that they were putting themselves out of a job. All of the workers, I believe, HAVE to belong to the UAW.

As the debate on raising the Minimum Wage goes on in Washington I have yet to lay my finger on that part of Article II that grants the Legislature the power to set wages. Any Minimum Wage set by the Congress should be challenged as Unconstitutional. The Interstate Commerce clause doesn't apply because most Minimum Wage jobs don't engage in business outside the Pizza Delivery Area.
As Milton Friedman says; "When you are spending other people's money, you don't care how it is spent."

OK, just kidding, but I would think that these union thugs that represent a shrinking membership might want to do something to attract members, not shun them.

I agree the Unions probably have run their course but... Around my area it seems like OSHA is being payed off by the companies themselves. We've had several fatal and disabilitating injurys, some caused by the companies neglect, yet OSHA slaps them on the wrist with $2-$5000 fines. These low fine give little incentive for the companies to improve the conditions.

Actually, Millicent, there are signs on many auto worker union hall parking lots prohibiting the parking of foreign cars--most of the signs have been there for 20 years.
