UAW Bans Pro Bush Marines From Parking Lot
WXYZ ^ | March 9, 2005 | Jenny Clark

Some U.S. Marines say they were surprised by the decision made by Detroit auto workers about parking. It all started with the cars some Marines drove, and what was on them.

The words that have some U.S. Marines in shock came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit. For a number of years now, dozens of Marine reservists have been thankful to park in the UAW’s lot for weekend training with no problem at all - until now.

Marines at nearby Marine Corps Reserve Center say on Tuesday morning, the director of security at the UAW told them that while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there.

U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Joe Rutledge told Action News, "We received a phone call from the UAW, who support us by letting us park down at their facility. They called and said they weren’t going to allow or they would turn away some vehicles."

A spokesman for the UAW released a statement to Action News which reads:

"While reservists certainly have the right to drive non-union made vehicles and display bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s, that doesn’t mean they have the right to park in a lot owned by members of the UAW."

As U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Lee Cooper explained, "We’re very appreciative, but on the other hand, it’s kind of discriminating between, let’s say a lance corporal going through college can only afford a 15-year-old vehicle and it happens to be a Nissan."

***Be nice if they could selectively decide who to fight for***

Ohhhhh, THAT'S a good line, Unc. Mind if I borrow it.

Hey, they used to burn down ROTC buildings. Why not a union hall?

OK, just kidding, but I would think that these union thugs that represent a shrinking membership might want to do something to attract members, not shun them.

"But now our Federal Government (OSHA) makes regulations for workplaces that provides for a reasonable safe working environment. Minimum wages and competition have provided for fair wages."
I agree the Unions probably have run their course but... Around my area it seems like OSHA is being payed off by the companies themselves. We've had several fatal and disabilitating injurys, some caused by the companies neglect, yet OSHA slaps them on the wrist with $2-$5000 fines. These low fine give little incentive for the companies to improve the conditions.

"B-U-T = behold the underlying truth."

LOL! I hadn't heard that one before but it's very true.

Maybe we need to boycott the UAW the way we did French products. They aren't the only ones building cars.

Maybe the Legion and VFW need to ban UAW-made cars from their parking lots.

The last sentence of the aricle does not make any sense; it seems part of it was deleted.

It really didn't have anything to do with the makes of the cars

Actually, Millicent, there are signs on many auto worker union hall parking lots prohibiting the parking of foreign cars--most of the signs have been there for 20 years.

Since Zenith was the last American company to make televisions--and they went `belly-up' years ago--I imagine their TVs are of foreign-make, like yours if you own one.

I drive American vehicles, but my daily driver turns 30 this year...the youngest in the fleet is 22, the oldest is 64.

There might be a couple of guys left who were around when it was made.

Ahhh, Union construction in NYC is a whole other subject. It is nearly impossible to do construction in NYC unless you are an established business with union contacts. The last place I worked did specialty heavy construction all over the US. An identical job in South Carolina took 5 men, but union rules made it a 16 person job in NYC. It also took twice as long. It also took a lot of palm greasing of inspectors to get acceptance. Concrete is another whole different topic.

No, cars do not have to be union made in the US, and i think it's Saturn and Nissan that are non-union built.

I have two union-made vehicles (1 truck, 1 deadly SUV) in the driveway, but I will be looking at the foreign vehicles next time. Heck, I think I would rather give my money to the Germans than to these pukes, and I am not at all happy with the Germans.

Concrete and garbage carting is still in the hands of the 'family'. The government has taken over all their favorite vices otherwise.

Most UAW auto plant workers are 45 or older.
They are in a "run it til it blows up" mode.
Make as much as you can, work as little as you can, & retire.
Many DO realize none of their offspring will ever work in a similar situation, the jobs will be gone.
IMHO the car companies will follow airlines and steel and go the Chapter 11 route.
These UAW guys will cry like babies when their pensions and bennies get hammered by the PBGC.

Now I disagree with the union decision, but its their parking lot. And I don't think not letting someone park in your parking lot is a denial of "basic rights" as you put it.

Everyone knows a lot of foreign cars are actually made here in the states.

Yes, but they are built by non-union labor.

When I bought my last car, I wanted to buy an American made car, built by non-union labor and that's why I bought a Honda Accord, built in Ohio.

I wonder what kind of TVs Tools Cameras etc etc those UAW workers buy

Unless the TVs and cameras are very old and purchased second hand, I doubt they buy Union Made in America.
