P.S. I really do normally enjoy your posts... Just wanted to be sure you knew that.
Hey, I feel your pain and angst with minor functionary DMV clerks...but it is a different day than when 1950s politeness ruled; there has to be because there are plenty of ID crooks out there. And about putting 'cuffs on Stewart's wife, or any other believed non-aggressive person stopped by police...well, just look what happened in Atlanta today when proper police proceedure wasn't followed.
"McShane, 36, was driving through Central Park around 11 a.m. when she was pulled over for a moving violation"
The moving violation was, she was driving in a restricted area of the park...in a big SUV, what are the cops supposed to think, better to err on the side of caution.
Okay, I have the best story. Years ago, I was appointed by the probate judge to represent two children who's mother had died. Her husband (not their father) was in jail. I talked to his lawyer who told me this and he thought it was a hoot. The man was driving his Saab through town when he was stopped for expired tags. Usually there's a ticket given with an admonision to show up on the court date with proof that the tags have been updated. In this case, however, the cop ran the tags and it showed that the man had a warrant out for about $50 in parking tickets. Still being polite about it, the cop apologized and told the man to follow him to the police station and either pay the tickets or post bond. The man followed him, went in and paid his tickets and got into his car to leave. It wouldn't start. From the sound it was obvious that the battery was dead. He was parked right next to the motor pool. The motorpool cop came out to offer him a jump start... the man panicked. Started to run off, they stopped him, popped the trunk (Saab's have the battery there) and found his dead wife.
Moral of the story, pay your parking tickets.
If you HAD a license, and it was suspended or revoked, that is a whole different deal.
And what Governor would that be? Governor Spitsonher perchance?
