depth is called a hypocenter and for instance in Calif usually shallow like 15 miles or so.....in Alaska where the biggest quakes are, they are deeper.....you will feel a shallow quake more than a deep on given the same magnitude,, and deep ones are harder to measure.....though a deep one of significant magnitude would do severe damage as well......a 6.0 at that depth wouldn't be much in Calif but is still bad in Iran.....

Interesting Factoid: The amount of energy released during the recent Tsunami was 10,000 larger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

very good.......most people have no idea of the relative power of nature........living in Calif, I kind of know what the power of an quake is and it would take most of the nukes on earth to approx one.......

The earthquake that generated the great Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 is estimated to have released the energy of 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs.

Death toll climbs to 500 in Iranian quake

CBC News

TEHRAN, IRAN - Rescue teams continue to pull out more bodies from the ruins of Iranian villages, destroyed when a powerful earthquake hit the country Tuesday, killing at least 500 people.

INDEPTH: Earthquakes
But heavy rain, freezing temperatures and the mountainous terrain hampered rescue efforts.

Crews have been using dogs and machinery to locate bodies trapped in the debris.

INDEPTH: Iran

The 6.4-magnitude quake hit the Kerman province near the town of Zarand, about 740 kilometres southeast of Tehran, affecting an estimated 30,000 people.

Many survivors were left homeless, living in tents and surviving on food rations.

"The death toll is now 500, and there's a possibility that the figure will increase," Mohammad Javad Fadaei, deputy governor of Kerman province, told the Associated Press.

About 40 villages were damaged in the quake, located in a region about 200 kilometres northwest of the historic city of Bam, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2003.

FROM DEC. 26, 2003: Quake toll in Iran now 25,000

The Iranian Red Crescent Society has said it does not need outside aid, but Iranian officials say medicine, syringes and tents are in short supply.

Iran lies on top of seismic fault lines and is often shaken by quakes.

"...The destructive power of an earthquake depends on the depth of its point of focus. For the most common quakes, known as "shallow-focus" events, the focus is just a few dozen kilometres below the surface. Because the crust is in motion so close to the surface, these are the most powerful and deadliest quakes.

In contrast, "deep focus" earthquakes originate hundreds of kilometres below the surface, and cause less damage..."

It's another new moon. Syzygy. The moon and sun are exerting gravitational force inline with the earth. More "tidal" deformation of the crust. Most big quakes occur +/- 1 day from an old or new moon.

While anything is possible, it's highly unlikely.

From USGS, here's a map showing major tectonic boundaries in the area. Iran has numerous fault lines and a history of major earthquakes.
