US House cuts back military aid for Poland 2005-03-17, 14:17

The US House of Representatives approved an $81.4 billion war spending bill that would slash President George Bush's foreign aid request and add nearly $2 billion more than he sought for defense.

The bill cuts $400 million that Bush had asked for to reward war allies within the so-called Solidarity Fund. One fourth of the fund money was supposed to be given to Poland – according to the promise president Aleksander Kwasniewski brought back from his talks with GW Bush earlier this year.

In a statement the White House asked the House to put it back, saying it would help partners such as Poland and the Slovak Republic. The Polish president how is currently paying a visit to Cyprus expressed his belief that Poland will receive the military aid promised by the American president.

Poland is a great friend of the US.

Don't get chained down by Brussels.

Don't approve the EU Constitution.

It's not really about money, as this was supposed to be a gesture.

This money was supposed to be spent on purchase of American military equipment for Polish troops, which are supposed to be engaged in foreign missions (e.g. Iraq, Afghanistan).

America has given already and still gives billions (not millions) of dollars to Egypt, Turkey.

Don't you think, that such a gesture of US Congress will be very telling for Poles?

Do you realize what influence it may have on Pole's attitude towards America?

Welcome in the real world.

In my opinion our only answer should be "bye bye Boeing, hello Airbus".

BTW US foreign military aid is more the aid for American defense industry. I wrote about it in this thread.
For Poland it would be better to buy this equipment than to get it as "a gift".

Well it's about time. But not enough by far. Cut it off completely and add a few dozen other countries to the list to be cut off as well.

Yes, I think that you are right, but...

"Well it's about time."

I don't understand. It supposed to be the beginning of serious military aid for Poland.

"But not enough by far. Cut it off completely "

It just has been cut off completely.

BTW Which countries in your opinion should stay on the list ?

I look to Washington's Farewell Address on foreign aid. And I look to the Framers' opinion of foreign aid. Also please not Adams' 1821 speech on Monsters to Destroy. Answer you question? If it doesn't the answer is none.

Not exactly...but its a technicality.

Im particularly pissed about the Palestinians, as they arent even a bonefide country...let alone a strategic ally.

As far as Egypt, we've been paying them off since the peace accords of Jimmah Carter.

Do you realize what influence it may have on Pole's attitude towards America?

But more importantly should any limited government conservative care? Of course not. But keep throwing our tax dollars away. Heck, the latest budget is 2.5 trillion. Another couple of years of Republican 'conservatism' we may be able to top $3 trillion. Won't that be great?!?
