OCONOMOWOC - A former chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party said he believes John Dean is "Deep Throat," an anonymous newspaper source made famous during Watergate.
Ody Fish of Pewaukee, who spent nearly 15 years as a member of the Republican National Committee, said he believes Dean was the one who passed along information to Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.
"Deep Throat brought down the presidency of Richard Nixon," Fish said. "Woodward said he wouldnt tell who it was until after Deep Throat died. Dean is still alive."
Dean was White House counsel to Nixon from July 1970 to April 1973. He became deeply involved in the Watergate coverup and was referred to as "master manipulator of the coverup" by the FBI. He would go on to become the star witness of the Watergate prosecution.
Dean was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in Watergate but served less than four months after cooperating with authorities.
In the summer of 1974, Fish was joined by then-Mich. Gov. Bill Milliken and then-Rep. John Rhodes, R-Ariz., to meet with Nixon and tell him his support was dwindling.
"The House (of Representatives) had already voted for impeachment proceedings. Rhodes had voted yes in the House. Milliken was one of a few governors supporting him, and I told him there were only three or four state chairmen supporting him," Fish said. "We told him we thought he ought to resign.
"He (Nixon) said he wanted to talk with (then-Attorney General) John Mitchell and a couple of key senators, hoping for somebody to tell him he could beat the rap. He resigned a few days later."
Chuck Herro of Oconomowoc, a longtime friend of Fish, said the former GOP leader has the credentials to speak candidly about the Nixon White House.
"As author Michael Crichton said, If you dont know history, you dont know anything," Herro said. "(Fish) is a witness to history."
While speaking Monday to the Oconomowoc Rotary Club, of which he is an honorary member, Fish said he did not believe Nixon gave the go-ahead for the attempted burglary at Democratic National Committee headquarters inside the Watergate building.
"It is my personal opinion that he did not authorize the break-in, but once it had occurred, he perjured himself in defending those involved," Fish said. "I believe the Senate would have found him guilty.
"Is Nixon to be forever chastised for what he did? I guess he probably should be. He can never be considered a great president. Perjury can never be forgiven."
Fish said the same should hold true for Bill Clinton, who was acquitted by the Senate in his impeachment trial resulting from lying under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
On June 20, 1972, three days after the Watergate break-in, about 18 minutes of a secret audiotape of the presidents Oval Office conversations were erased. Nixons secretary, Rose Mary Woods, who died in January, later said she could have been the person responsible.
"Clearly that was not an accident," Fish said. "Why he didnt just throw the whole damn tape away I dont know."
Fish organized security at the 1972 Republican national convention, at which Nixon was nominated for a second term. Although he served as national committeeman for the Republicans into the 1980s, he said he had no contact with Nixon after the president resigned Aug. 9, 1974.
Nixon died in April 1994.
"Remember what our mothers taught us - we ought not to lie," Fish said.
I hope the good Lord gives you enough years to reconsider that one!
Dean does suck but thats an interesting way to put it..
He says perjury should be grounds for impeachment, and Nixon would have been convicted had it gone to the Senate.
Then he suggests destruction of evidence. Is he morally consistent?
G Gordon Liddy said that and dared Dean to sue him a long time ago.
I may be wrong to trust my all to often faulty memory, but wasn't John Dean the guy Liddy once threatened to stab in the neck with a pencil?
(AP) Feb 21, 2001 Thursday and dismissed the $5.1 million defamation lawsuit against Watergate conspirator G. Gordon Liddy after the jury was unable to reach a verdict.
The jury deliberated eight hours over two days before sending U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz a note reading, "No way we can reach a verdict."
Ida "Maxie" Wells, a former secretary at the Democratic National Committee, sued Liddy for saying that the Watergate burglars were searching Wells' desk for a package of call-girl photos believed to include a picture of the future wife of John Dean, the former Nixon White House counsel.
Liddy took the stand earlier this week and stood by his account. He said the burglars who broke into the Watergate were not looking for political intelligence on the 1972 campaign, but compromising photos.
Dean has said the theory is ridiculous. His wife, Maureen, has disputed the existence of such a call-girl ring.
Oh, JOHN Dean, le batard!
With all due respect to Mr. Fish, his theory doesn't make that much sense. Why would Dean reveal information that would lead to his own imprisonment?
I strongly suggest that folks read "Book Two - Golden Boy" of Silent Coup, by Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin. The "Golden Boy" is Dean and this section of the book expands on the theory that the break-in was intended to cover up Dean's girlfriend's (Maureen Elizabeth Kane Owen Biner Dean) relationship to a ring of prostitutes run by Maureen's roommate Erika L. "Heidi" Rikan/Cathy Dieter.
Dean could very well be Deep Throat.
"His wife, Maureen, has disputed the existence of such a call-girl ring."
I remember "Mo" from the hearings, very attractive. Always wondered what she saw in the little wimp.
Not likely. The supposed reason that Deep Throat's name has not been disclosed is to protect his aninimty so that he could continue his career. Dean let that ball drop long ago. Disclosing he's Deep Throat would not in any way harm him, and in fact would probably make him a lot wealthier because he could sell more of those books he likes to write. And besides, it seems relatively certain that he would not help break the story that landed him in jail, or that he would at least use that fact as a mitigating factor at his sentencing.
Here she is with the geeky little twerp.
How many foks have been ID'ed as "Deep Throat" over the years?
There is no Deep Throat. An imaginary character so that Woodward would not have to reveal sources.
C. Hitchens is convinced that Kissinger is Deep Throat ... and Hitch should have enough inside data to write a book on it ...
My bet is that Woodward was doing Bernstein (or vice versa) in one of the stalls in the men's room when to other guys came and were talking. W & B were able to pick up enough detail to manufacture a whole story. They couldn't cite "an unnamed source" so, they manufactured one. There is no fake rule more dangerous than the one that says it is a good thing for media pimps to be able to conceal their source.
Does any one believe that had Dean been Deepthroat he wouldn't already have taken credit? He'd be writing more books, doing more interviews and claiming credit for everything!
But, if there really was a Deepthroat, what information has he provided recently and, to whom? Dean is more likely to be the Tooth Fairy than Deepthroat!
