She was (and I don't remember the facts of the case) presumably able to prove that (1) the Enquirer was malicious against her AND (2) engaged in a reckless disregard for the truth. It has to be BOTH situations to be libel.

They wrote she was drunk while attending a play.

She sued on the basis it was a lie, she had nothing to drink that day and the jury awarded her I believe it was 1 Million.
