WASHINGTON (AP)-U.S. military guards discovered a 600-foot tunnel-dug with makeshift tools-leading out of the main prison facility for detainees in Iraq before anyone had the opportunity to escape, officials said Friday.

Next time, just drill a hole in it and fill it with water - then watch the fun when they try to escape. :)

Hmm... would it be possible to pretend that the tunnel has not been discovered - and set a good minefield around the possible location of its exit terminal?

Quick! Get those detainees here to Boston! If they are into digging like this, I've got a really BIG DIG that I'd like to have them work on!

We need to do some serious testing on these people. They are like moles. No matter where they are they dig tunnels.
To: TheCrusader
The problem is that then you have to get rid of the alligators after they get done eating would be escapees.
Perhaps fill it half full of water and put pirhanas in the water?

Let them dig their tunnel. But put a holographic projector at the end, and the next time they escape, play a hologram of Helen Thomas surrounded by fire, saying, "Welcome to Hell, boys!"

My brother was in Stalag 3 after the Brits did their dig and were caught. He said it didn't stop others from digging later. Very few made it to freedom...

On a serious note, you're right - they like hiding in tunnels and caves. Why? Because doing so has preserved them from foreign invaders for centuries. Most recently, it was highly effective against the Soviets. It worked well against the British and the French, too.
Unfortunately for them, the US learned about tunnels the hard way in Vietnam (though in the end we beat everyone who thought it was a good idea to hide in a tunnel complex) and have spent the last 35 years devising new and more efficient ways to detect and eliminate people who like hiding in holes or digging tunnels.
Pretty much there's nothing they can do to keep from getting caught or slaughtered by the US. And that's a good thing.

I think we need to channel this energy in a more positive direction. For instance, can you imagine how rush hour traffic would improve in D.C. if we had these moles to dig tunnels that would facilitate our commuting from place to place. AWESOME!
To: TheCrusader
I object to cruelty to animals. Have you ever imagined what it would be like to hear or watch an alligator try to spit?
To: theDentist
As long as they name the three tunnels Mohammud, Mohammud and Mohammud.

That fact that they managed to dug a
600 ft tunnel, two football fields, is pretty darn amazing and points out some serious flaws in oversight of the prison.
Me thinks someone was sleeping on the job or being very well paid to turn the other cheek.

Or they found the tunnel earlier, waited until it was almost finished (thanks, seismic sensors!) and the escape attempt was about to be made, then collected all the responsible parties.

What is with Iraqis and tunneling or living in the ground? Saddam in a spider hole, tunnels every which way, underground cities, and passageways out to the desert?
