How a Lone Diplomat Compromised the Hunt for Bin Laden
NY Sun ^ | March 28, 2005 | RICHARD MINITER

WASHINGTON - A lone U.S. ambassador compromised America's hunt for Osama bin Laden in Pakistan for more than two years, The New York Sun has learned.

Ambassador Nancy Powell, America's representative in Pakistan, refused to allow the distribution in Pakistan of wanted posters, matchbooks, and other items advertising America's $25 million reward for information leading to the capture of Mr. bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders.

Instead, thousands of matchbooks, posters, and other material - printed at taxpayer expense and translated into Urdu, Pashto, and other local languages - remained "impounded" on American Embassy grounds from 2002 to 2004, according to Rep. Mark Kirk, Republican of Illinois.

While the American government was engaged in a number of "black" or covert intelligence activities to locate Al Qaeda leaders, Mr. Kirk said, the "white" or public efforts - which have succeeded in the past in leading to the capture of wanted terrorists - were effectively shut down in the months following the September 11 attacks.

Mr. Kirk discovered Ms. Powell's unusual order in January 2004 and, over the past year, launched a series of behind-the-scenes moves that culminated in a blunt conversation with President Bush aboard Air Force One, the removal of the ambassador, and congressional approval for reinvigorating the hunt for Mr. bin Laden.

Good question but it's worse than that---further down in the story it notes she"gave an order"to not distribute---we may not find the answer until the autopsy.

You go ahead and jump to a conclusion at your leisure. I'm gonna go ahead and jump based on GW's recall of the short hair. The story notes Kirk saying GW was cautious and that he clearly took pains to investigate. This is deadly serious stuff and NO ONE is indispensible---when caught screwing off you are guilty until proven innocent and you may never get the chance to prove your innocense. Everybody seems to agree there was a pile of un-distributed stuff in the embassy----NUFF SAID!

You're probably right. I found this:

Link

However, I have a problem with Miniter saying this in the article:

More than $57 million has been paid to 43 people who provided credible information about the whereabouts of known terrorists since the program's founding in 1984. But little has been paid since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

That statement simply is not true.

Secretary Powell today [8/01/03] approved the payment of a $30 million reward to the individual who provided a critical piece of information that led us to the location of Uday and Qusay Hussein. We are pleased with the results in this case. We are pleased that we were able to pay this reward. It is the largest ever paid under the Rewards for Justice program.

IOW, at least $30 million has been paid since September 11, 200l thru the Rewards For Justice program...$30 million of the total $57 million? I do not consider that 'little'.

Link

Why would Miniter lie about something so readily known to be 'not true'? Or, if he's not lying intentionally, maybe he's just being sloppy? If so, what else is sloppy about the article, I ask myself. When I find such blatant factual errors in an article, I tend to take everything else in the article with a grain of salt.

No offense with what I about to write. Already a bad move to place a woman there (I know, I know, we are speaking "silently" to the "feudal" forces of terror, by demontrating how far a woman can go in the West - I realize this "logic" - and then, there is realpolitik ... I digress). An even worse move to put a very, how shall I put this, non feminine woman there. And then, the icing on the cake - apparently, she was an insubordinate #@!* disturber to boot. Now I fully well realize that we are already handicapped by the fact that Foggy Bottom is made up of 90 plus % utopian idiots, transnational progressives and other sad specimens. But even so, this is astounding. HEEEELLOOOOO! IS ANYBODY HOME?

I hate to say it, but I increasingly believe that Joe McCarthy had a point. He was a complete disaster trying to make the point. But, I do believe that there is a dangerous 5th column at State, in need of deep investigation. The only question really is, to me, how to do it without creating a Constitutional crisis and without resulting in everyone to the Left of Trent Lott crying out in unison "witch hunt!" Still, it really needs to be done, IMHO ...

RE: Is the State Dept trying to "teach them a lesson" by sending liberal/non-religious/white women to be our ambassadors and negotiators?

Yep. Pretty lame, eh?

Witch hnts are fine.

(*1) If there is compelling evidence of witches actually around who need hunting.

(*2) If the witches being hunted do, indeed, threaten the country.

(*3) IF and ONLY IF, only legitimate witches are hunted.

(*4) And, IF once the witches are hunted (and removed) the witch hunt stops.

You and I agree, but the MSM would completely distort things. Not that it should stop it, by any means. Someone else noted that we essentially stopped prosecuting all but the most outrageous instances of treason during the 1960s - that's the problem, most folks today would consider what would have been normal witch hunts in the past, an example of "Bush is Hitler" today. It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world (afterall, liberalism is a mental disorder ... ).
