I also realized that some of the fat probably comes from butter/margarine on the bun... so skipping the bun seems like an even better idea...

True. No one is putting a gun to our heads to eat this stuff. These companies are making money hand over fist because people like the stuff. If people don't want it they won't buy it. Simple as that.
