Now off the launching pad and in the running to replace Pope Paul John II, Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga, shoots from the lip.
A drawn-looking John Paul II, unable to preside over last Sundays Palm Sunday for the first time in his 26-year papacy, and reportedly not responding well to his medication, and was unable to speak during the traditional Easter Sunday blessing.
Among the ranks of potential papal replacement cardinals, Maradiaga is restive.
The long on charisma Maradiaga, who hails from Honduras, is ready to rock the Vatican boat.
The difference between the Polish pontiff and the would-be one is of the night and day order.
With endearing dignity and grace, Pope John Paul II earned his title as "Pope of the people".
"John Pauls role in the battle against communism gave him a place in history most other popes never attained." (businessweek.com).
When he was known in the 1950s as Father Karol Jozef Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II stood up, undeterred to the power and might of the communists, holding mass in empty fields in any weather.
Like the Communist infiltrators said to be at work in the Vatican, Cardinal Maradiaga would do away with tradition.
Bearing down on the papacy with bold promises for change, "Maradiaga The Loquacious" sounds like hes already there.
"When the Sacred College of Cardinals names me pope, Im gonna shake things up," Maradiaga said. "And Im not just talking about giving the Pope mobile a new coat of paint. Im talking about big moves that will reconfirm the Catholic Churchs position as the supreme, full and immediate power in the secretarian world, may God grant us peace."
In a Vatican world where pomp and ceremony are part of life, Maradiaga sounds like the classic high school braggart. . . . .

The College of Cardinals aren't keen on Papal electioneering.
This is from Scrappleface, right? What hoot! This guy has about as much chance of being the next Pope as Jose Canseco has of being the next Commissioner of Baseball.
I can imagine an American becoming Pope: "You want me to do what? C'mon! Isn't that kind of pope-y? I don't know, can't we do something new? I don't want to be sooooooo pope-like, you know what I'm saying?"
I'd be stunned if either Maradiaga or Tettamanzi (God help us) is elected.
Gee, Judi got some really great quotes from the Cardinal.
KSAT.com wasn't so lucky:

SAN ANTONIO -- A Cardinal who was in San Antonio Tuesday to talk about social issues could be picked to succeed Pope John Paul II.
Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga was visiting Texas from Honduras, and he spoke at St. Paul Catholic Church Community Center.
Maradiaga declined to discuss his possible succession to pope, saying he would "leave it to divine providence."
I'm not Catholic, so I might not have the saying correct: "He who enters the conclave a pope, leaves it as a cardinal." An excellent idea.
What's the low down on this guy, that makes you say this? I haven't heard his name.
It doesn't appear that Judi McLeod has properly credited The Onion with this, either:Canada Free Press
It looks as though she's lifted the whole thing from The Onion without proper attribution. That's plagiarism.
Just wondering what your objection is to Cardinal Tettamanzi. I dont know much about him. In any case, I wonder if this was the last Easter for the current Holy Father. :(
There was a book which was written by an ex priest in 1995 called "The Next Pope." It was a template for a "new" pope steering the Catholic church, dumping it's dogma and cramming in current, socially acceptable "cures" for 2000 years of solid, constant Catholic teaching.
This when when John Paul II was supposedly near his end then. John Paul last Sunday is waving from and window and the ex priest is dead.
Wonder what the next 10 years will bring besides a 93 year old polish vicar, and senile or dead critics. Seems as implausible as it did in 1995 doesn't it?

Not as bad as his predecessor at Milan, Martini. But then that's not a difficult feat.
I thought it was parody too. This man is er ah a cardinal?
What day is it?
