Catholic Priest: Terri Schiavo Responsive Til Death, Prayed With Family

A leading Catholic priest who visited Terri Schiavo on two separate occasions in the hours before her death says Terri was in a weakened medical condition from 13 days of starvation but was responsive until her death. The disabled woman even prayed with her family.

"Last night, I spent about two hours with her until past midnight, together with Bobby Schindler and Suzanne, and then again this morning for about an hour and a half, and then right up until about ten minutes before she died," Father Frank Pavone said.

Pavone, the director of Priests for Life, said most of the time was spent in prayer with and for Terri and telling her that people across the country supported her.

When he prayed, Pavone said "She was very responsive -- closing her eyes when I said, 'Let's pray together, Terri,' opening them up after the prayer."

Pavone made the remarks in an interview with Renew America, a grassroots organization headed by former presidential candidate Alan Keyes.

He indicated Terri was smiling and "returning the kiss of her father" as well as "turning her eyes to me when I spoke to her."

"In many other ways, as well, responsive," Pavone added.

"Even today, although, of course, with the effects of the dehydration, her response was much less," Pavone told Renew America. "Nevertheless, her eyes were open, her eyes were moving, and as I prayed with her."

Pavone talked about how Terri Schiavo's plight and the national debate surrounding her life and death will continue as the nation grapples with end of life issues.

"Terri didn't die today from anything except the fact that her food and water were withheld for the last two weeks," he said. "She had no other underlying illness whatsoever. This is a case of throwing away a disabled person

"And we have to ask ourselves, has our nation now begun to go down the road of killing those who are disabled, simply because somebody says that they want to be killed," Pavone concluded

I heard Fr. Pavone (by the way, I've never been more proud to be a Catholic than when I heard him take to the mike) today on CA Live, and I don't believe he was referring to seeing her today when he made mention of her closing her eyes when he prayed and opening them again when he was finished. I believe he was referring to sometime in the recent past. Could be wrong, but that's what I got from hearing him.

I hate to say "thanks" under the circumstances but "thanks" for that link. I plan to post that photo on my car as a reminder to everyone what happened today may have been the end of Terri's mortal existence but it also marks the beginning of my own determination to expose not just euthanasia advocates but also the left as a demented, callous, hypocritical whole. Till my last breath!

I have heard these devout and good people. I really don't think that lying is part of their make-up. They were fighting like hell to save their daughter from destruction, as were the people that supported them.

No, but in my medical training I got to know the results of severe dehydration. Near the end the brain starts seriously misfiring. This leads to delirium, sometimes convulsions, and if the sodium balance was thrown off cerebral edema (swelling of the brain). A perfectly normal person won't be very responsive in this late stage.

I was watching a documentary about cannibalism on the History Channel and it did go through the effects of starvation on the human body when how the organs go dormant and so on as well as affecting the brain. When a person gets so starved, he goes "crazy" for lack of a better term where scientists do say this brings on the odea of cannibalism. It also affects judgement too where one expedition to the North Pole failed and the ship's crew resorted to cannibalism and made wrong decisions like taking treasure with them instead of hunting for food and letting the stuff go to lessen their burden. Of course, Terri is different from that but as you put it, starvation affects the brain. Also the human body is like a battery in your car, with little water, the starter turns slow and your headlights dim and when there is no water, your car won't start at all.
